sorry if this is a stupid question, but what about power? USA use 110v if I recall correctly. The adapter that it comes with, does it support 110/230v? Or am I going to have to go buy a step-down transformer lol

I personally would pay the extra few hundred rand and get a proper guarantee.

There was a whole discussion on the power supply. The power supply that came with my Roku (about a year old) is rated at 110V only. The previous models were rated at 110-230V, but they had the same model number as the 110V rated power supplies. So for some reason the manufacturer of the power supply changed the rating. I tested my power supply (without the Roku connected) and it worked fine on 220V, but I decided not to take a chance and I bought a 230V rated power supply. It's your call.
 
ok, so I have a stupid question.

When I setup my Roku account I need to use a VPN to make sure its a USA Roku account?

Im not interested in the UK Roku account

No, you will only need it when you link your Roku. Your Roku will display a specific code which you then insert in the web browser which then links your Roku to the specific region and then allows you to install a few apps.

I know I didn't use a VPN when I set mine up earlier in the year.

I did run into an initially perplexing problem because I set it up from the UK and, because I happened to be going through Unotelly at the time, it kept forcing me to have a US roku account which is exactly what I didn't want. Eventually I figured out what was going on and managed to get my UK account after I disabled Unotelly.

I initially set up my Roku account without a VPN, and Netflix worked, but Hulu+ did not. I had to delete my account, do a factory reset and create a new account with the VPN. After that Hulu+ worked.
 
I managed to create my second ROKU account with US access to all the channels by using the HOLA Google Chrome extension - worked 100%

Of course I will need VPN / Unotelly if I actually decide to use Netflix / Hulu

Yep for initial roku account setup one doesn't necessarily need uno vpn you can use any vpn service in the UK or US depending on your channel preference.

PS: I went for UK for the BBCs and 4oDs 5Ods :)
 
Question to those using Netflix on the Roku 3 with Unotelly configured on your router.

Do you have static routes setup to prevent public DNS lookups on the Roku?

You certainly need those configured, otherwise random errors will pop up

Something I noticed is that on my router, you can either select your IP (external) or you can chose the interface. We all have non-static IP's in SA as far as I know, so opted for the interface option.

Shouldnt be an issue, right?

Might just be the Router I have, its a Telkom issued, Dlink DSL-2750U

When tell it to use the adapter, it doesnt block the ping test. If I try 127.0.0.1 that isnt allowed in the IP section. I specifically DONT want to use the external IP as this will surely change somewhere along the line. I tried the Router IP and that works like a charm.

Aside from those 4 IP's are there other I should be blocking as well?
