Roof insulation.

No heating inside, and tiled floors throughout the house, which certainly dont help with heat retention.

Prior to the installation i would run my gas heater in the sitting room/lounge for 3 -5 hours in the evening in winter, since then i decreased the usage to maybe an hour or two in midwinter, and since mid August havn't used it at all.
Location being C.T. Northern Suburbs.

I live right next to the Jukskei, so my house is The Ice Planet of Hoth in winter.
I installed an anthracite heater this past winter ... it's nothing short of brilliant , but my house directs airflow in a very bad way so the hot air (once risen to the ceiling) flows towards the door and kitchen instead of towards the passageway and bedrooms. No fancy tools needed for the above discovery, I just raise my hand as high as I can and I can feel where the hot air flows :)
Lounge / Dining room stays lekker warm, but the bedrooms are still cold.
I hope to have the airflow problem fixed before next winter (God willing!).

But (back on topic), having good insulation is gonna allow me to get deeper into May before having to light up the heater (...and switch off earlier in August), and to run the heater at a lower burn to save coal. Plus it's gonna mean that one heat source is enough for the whole house. So it's definitely still on my list of things to do (...when i have the $$$)

Recently did my roof insulation using 135mm Isotherm.
Was R370 a roll for the 7M rolls, so R53 a meter + install costs (minimal).

No idea on whether it will make a difference, its a new build.

Really easy to install, I'd diy if you have roof access.

I decided to go ahead with the 145mm Isotherm and the installation team rocked up this morning just before eight.
They did a fantastic job!

They have a September special running at the moment and the final price worked out at R79 per square.
Do keep in mind that your ceiling may require vacuum cleaning, which is extra I think.
 
We have pine ceilings in the living areas and down-lights in the bedrooms.

The last thing I want when the South-easter howls, is sh*t sifting through my ceiling.
 
Bumping abit of an old thread, but anyone know if there are any good deals happening on Isotherm 135mm x 750mm? Im rather keen on insulating my roof. Thinking about DIY so i have piece of mind that its been done correctly. But if there are spiders I might need to go for the installed route :P

It's difficult to find the thicker IsoTherm other than through the installers and the installers get massive discounts. I think I had 145mm installed for about the same price I could get the 100mm IsoTherm from Builders. At those rates, it doesn't make sense to DIY. Get a quote from the installers and then check prices, it likely won't be worth the DIY effort.

Don't buy isotherm from Builders, go to the supplier.
 
The price of installation isn't putting me off. I just like to do things myself so I know its been done properly. Making sure its nice and deep in the corners ect. Maybe others which have had it installed can comment.

My roof area is about 259sq meters.
Can i do sections like bedrooms and leave the rest of the roof?

Have you noticed a big difference in temperature with the current heat wave?

- Insulation blocks heat from entering from the roof in summer and holds in the heat in winter.

But doesn't it keep the heat trapped inside? Cos heat is sure to make its way into the home during the day through the windows and walls.

I'd love to see temp readings (inside vs outside) for anyone who's got good insulation.

Anyway... I'm hoping to get my ceiling cleaned up this weekend and to call someone next week to come in and install.
