RouteSentry for Vista (beta) - please help me test

Just make your windows date a few weeks back, works fine then.

Everytime you start routesentry, you have to set the time? I've upgraded to VISTA and now I am unable to use my favourite little routing program :( I know its free - so i dont mean to complain!

Is there a way that you can share the internet connections from a PC running on XP with Routesentry to a PC running Vista, basicaly using the XP PC as a gateway?

Anyone got this working on Vista 64bit and using Wimax? I don't have a router and don't think it is wise to buy one just for this...

Fix the your Vista RouteSentry routing problem

Just want to make a note as to why it appears to not be splitting local and international bandwidth sometimes.

The first thing I should mention is that to see if the routing tables have been set up correctly, type
Code:
route print
in a cmd window. If the output scrolls for a few screens, then your routes are set up properly. If its just a few entries long, then something is wrong.

The other problem that a lot of VISTA users will have, is that you are not able to use RASPPPoE

My diagnosis is as follows.

1. You are using your router in half-bridge mode (duh)
2. You are connecting to your local account through the router.
3. You are connecting to your international account through the normal dial-up method.
4. You are running some form of p2p app, probably a bittorrent one.
5. The torrent client only knows about your dial-ip (international) account IP address, and is reporting THAT address to the tracker.
6. You are not a beautiful and unique snow-flake.
7. The tracker is reporting your international IP address to all the peers.
8. The peers are connecting to you via the reported international IP address.
9. All requests made to your client via that IP will be serviced through your dial-up account, and therefore, your international account. However your requests to local peers will still be routed through your router-connected account (local).

The Solution (Choose 1)
1. Swap your connections. ie. Router connects to international, Dial-up to local. (Will probably wreak havok on any international p2p downloads)
2. Check your torrent client settings, in uTorrent, there is an option to specify exactly which IP address should be reported to the tracker.
In uTorrent Options->Preferences->BitTorrent. "IP/Hostname to report to tracker".
Get the IP from the routers admin page or however you like. If you are using a local torrent site (For Linux distros and OSS of course), your local IP address should be reported on your user page. The only problem you might have is that the IP WILL eventually change when your line reconnects, so you need to keep a close eye on it.

Pro-Tip: If you know of a local DynamicDNS service, and can configure your router to automatically update your IP whenever the connection resets, then simply enter your DDNS host name into the "IP/Hostname to report to tracker" field.

Lastly.
1. I didnt really need all those numbers, but its too late now, so bite me :D
2. Need moar info? Ask.

Even tho RASPPPOE now has a 64-bit version, the RASPPPOE.EXE doesn't see the protocol (in Vista) because the device is not signed , so I can't set up similtaneous pppoe connections using RASPPPOE. This wasn't a problem in XP.

Is there someway to get around the unsigned driver issue or is it possible to set up similtaneous pppoe connections without using RASPPPOE?

I'm new to Vista... plz help

The RASPPPOE works fine in Vista 64bit. However, ther is an exclamation mark when checking it in device manager, just ignore it as the setup will work. Well that's how mine is setup :)

I now own a netgear DG834G adsl router with the latest firmware. I don't see any options for half bridge mode (if that is what I should look for) and I have added my username and password in the router, but it doesn't connect. Should I connect the router with the usb cable? I'm a happy wimax client, so no rj11 for me... :-) Can't choose the router in route sentry as well.

Does anyone know if half-bridge mode is available on the Marconi ADSL 4 Ports Router (Telkom)? It doesn't have a model number and its not wireless.

The product specification (http://www.marconisa.co.za/4portsadsl.htm) says:
"LAN mode support: bridged/routed Ethernet over ATM (RFC 1483)"

What does that mean?

Edit: under WAN Configuration, I have the option to setup multiple (up to 8) adapters. They are called Pvc 0, Pvc 1 ... Pvc 7. I also see the option to setup route tables as follows:
Destination Netmask Gateway

The gateway can be set to: Specify IP or Select Interface (Pvc 0 ... Pvc 7)

Does this mean i could just setup 2 adapters, one local and one international, and then add the local routes (as obtained by cmd -> route print) and select Pvc 1 (the local one)?
Would there be a quicker way to add all the routes instead of one at a time? (that could take a while)

Edit 2:
There are so many bridge settings...
When creating an adapter (i.e. setting up the username & password, connection type to PPPoE LLC), the connection type can also be 1483 Bridged LLC. There is also the option of enabling bridge (bridge enabled and PPPoE LLC selected - Local works fine with route sentry NOT enabled). In this mode, I can still create another PPPoE connection in Vista. However, when I enable RS (RS says connecting to the international is a success) nothing works. No local or international.

Under Misc settings I found an option to Enable half-bridge mode. The instant I do this, I can no longer access my router via 10.0.0.2 and local and/or international doesn't work (RS enabled or not - here RS cannot connect to the international account).

It would seem as though my router does support half bridge mode. So what am I doing wrong? I want the router to connect to the local (telkom account) and windows to "dial-up" to the international (axxess).

Assuming you have the netgear dg834g v4, the half bridge mode is called pppoe relay. it is found on the WAN setup tag. (enable PPPoe relay)

Firmware should be V5.01.09. Previous firmware did not work for PPPoe relay.

trust this helps!

ok. after some more research, I found out that creating only 1 adapter, enabling bridge, and setting connection type to PPPoE LLC is essentially half-bridge mode. This was the mode in which RS could dial the international account, but no web pages loaded at all (local and international). They just went straight to "Page cannot be displayed", without appearing to even try to connect.

Could my problem be with ESET Smart Security's firewall settings? It worked fine when I just had the local account. Does anything need to be changed?

If RS is enabled, but the international connection is not connected, and I set RS to NOT dial it, then I can browse local sites. The minute I connect the international connection, I cannot browse anything at all.

Help please!

so, the final verdict....

does Route Sentry work with Vista?

some say yes, some say no... ??

yes the program runs, but its useless because there is no way of dialling two ISP's at the same time with vista

finally - someone who can give me something to try and not just say no...

sorry, i did read the thread but after 12 pages it becomes a litte excessive...

thanks teraside!

Pleasure ;)

Generally, I use the Int connection as saved on the router and the local connection as the dialup connection, since I use more int than local.
