RROD - I'm desperate

I feel your pain!!! This just happened to me know!!! :( I wanna cry!!! Gonna read through the post now and see what solution there is....but if anyone's handing out shortcuts...CPT help is much appreciated.

Oh...and I don't have receipts left either as I bought mine in 2006 when I was still in the UK.

I remember MID charging R690 for a replacement if you lost the slip. Not too sure how and to what it applies to :( All retailers are saying, go to MID as well

yeah...it seems like the only viable option, will call them and Microsoft support tomorrow morning and take it from there!

I lot off RROD's again all of a sudden, the heat?
 
And dust build up inside the console doesn't help. It's a flaw present in all Xbox 360's, no matter the manufacturing date :(

A quick explanation of RROD via copy & paste quotation:

Explanation of the so called "ROD"-defect:
The cause for 90% of the hardware issues is that one of the solder balls under the GPU became loose or is even shorting out.

There are 3 main reasons for that:
1) Due to new E.U law Microsoft was forced to use lead free solder. A con of this solder is that it cracks more easily under the pressure it is taken under when the Xbox cools down after turning it off. That's why the solder balls either loose contact(cold solder joint) or crack and shorten out with the others(bridged solder joints)...
2) The GPU is getting pretty hot (up to 90°C), the higher the temperature is the more time the solder balls have to crack...
3) The main cause is though that Microsoft uses so called X-Clamps to mount the heatsinks on the mainboard. Under these X-Clamps there is a little pin right in the center under the chip that puts all the pressure on a tiny area which makes the mainboard flex because the mainboard under the center of the chip is bushed up and the 4 corners are pulled down. This takes the solder balls under extreme stress and causes them to loose contact sooner or later(some are pulled away from the mainboard, others are heavily pressed into it).

Has anyone opened their xbox and reapplied thermal compound etc with any success?

Admittedly, this would void your warranty if you should have one.
 
Merely reapplying thermal paste doesn't solve the problem ... if that is what you're insinuating.
 
well i was looking at the x-clamp "fix" ... sorry, i'll rephrase what i'm really asking. If you don't have the RROD yet, is it a worthwhile exercise to open the xbox to do the x clamp fix, use some artic silver?
 
You can do the x-clamp replacement as a preventative measure, I'll be doing so when my 1 yr warranty runs out at Christmas of my personal 360.

It merely addresses the uneven pressure of the factory fitted x-clamp mounting. The solder balls cracking and breaking loose is caused by heat/cool down cycles of the normal operation of the 360. That can only be fixed with temperature controlled SMD reflow or BGA re-balling (more hi-tech).

I'd suggest investing in a Whisper fan or doing a volt mod of the stock fan to aid in cooling as well. External fans are a no-no :mad:
 
Is there space inside to cut a hole in the side panel (or top depending which way it is) and mount a 80mm fan - or a 120mm AC fan ;)

You can mount a fan on the right hand side close to the CPU, that's the only space inside the chassis. Otherwise a dremel to cut the top panel of the case to mount a fan.

1337 stuff ;)
 
I think thats the way to do it... i'll just have to think of a way to make it look pretty... maybe a nice grill, and i'll need to think of a place to hide the power for the fan. I'd be keener to use AC so as not to place any unnecessary load on the psu.

I took mine to IC and they just gave me a form and told me to bugger off :(
