The effing generator overheated - tools. Piss poor effort.
Yep that was the email reply I received about 45 minutes ago: Quote "
Good Day Valued Client,
Please be advised that the power outage affecting regions within the Western Cape is still ongoing.
RSAWEB backup generator was negatively affected by heat which resulted in service disruption.
Our engineers are currently attending to the issue and trying to get our servers restored. There is no ETA as of yet.
We thank you for your patience and understanding."
I have no words.

I had bad service from them as soon as I signed up a couple of months ago, they responded almost immediately "pre-sales".

I'll be gone as soon as my 12 months is up - not having redundancy/fault tolerance beyond one point of failure doesn't work for me, I lost half a days work which is a couple of months of payments to them.

I'm limited to fibre as our mobile coverage is almost non-existent at home.

Is the CT power outage causing issues with others fibre coverage? My router has been unable to authenticate RSAweb today. (Tokai area)

I also had horrendous service from them after I signed up.

I actually cancelled after 2 months. I went with Afrihost and they have a migration feature where they "buy you out" from your existing ISP i.e. the cancellation charge you incurred on your existing ISP will be given as a credit to your new Afrihost account. Just check their website for the Ts and Cs. It worked perfectly for me and I have been with Afrihost for over 13 months and never been happier.

Their rep here on MyBB is also very professional and help compare to the non-existent presence of RSAWeb.

must say we have been with RSA Web since 2013 and could not be happier. When there is an issue I have direct contact with one of the network engineers and he is a massive help and puts customer first. Yes all 6 of our links with them went down but they notified me before I even picked it up.

I've been with RSAWeb since 2016 and this is the first time I've lost Internet connection for more than a few minutes (which doesn't happen very often) so I wouldn't judge them solely on this incident. I guess they weren't prepared for 14+ hours without electricity, something so rare it's the first time in my life I've had the electricity go down for so long in the centre of Cape Town, but hopefully going forward they will have a better solution.

I'm not - I'm also judging them on their aftersales service and how they went from responding almost immediately to flat out ignoring me after I signed up - and not being able to get hold of them on on the phone.

14 hours of no electricity for the entire country I'd understand - but - just in the City of Cape Town - and then the entire country goes down with RSAWeb? That's just bad planning.

Unfortunately I had to also take a DC UPS which wasn't optional at the time (I see it is now) - it now sits in my drawer unused - but - will look into it either way.

When troubleshooting my dad's connection last year I noticed on his RSAweb connection
  • Netflix throttled to 1.5mbps on at 50 mbps connection
  • Apple update servers were unreachable
They are fixed now but you have to wonder what was going on as these are not exactly edge cases

I signed up this month (moved into new place) and it took almost a week for them to activate an existing line. I did not want a router/UPS...just wanted the line activated. Took me multiple calls and being transferred multiple times for it to be sorted out. I was and am regretting I signed up, but they fooled me with the "Best ISP" and their Google reviews are only when you get up and running, they send you a link to rate and review them...so probably people who don't get great service don't even get the link.

Granted it was Black Friday so I will give them the benefit of the doubt...hope I don't have any further issues that warrant support.

So how is a engine affected by heat. Can only be a coolant problem. Can only be a lack of coolant. How can there be a lack of coolant??? Answer is no scheduled maintenance to check or measure coolant levels. Could also be they put in the wrong coolant or there was a leak in the system. Multiple scenarios but don't know the precise reasons. Maybe someone can shed more light.

So in reality they had component resilience but it failed due to poor process management. In reality it is was as simple as a checklist which all engineers turn their noses up at as they think executing a checklist is beneath them as they are too clever for that.

Hint: You do not run a backup generator unattended without regular checks. Most people have them start automatically and assume that a hope and a prayer will keep the mechanical beast going.

I see this kaaak all over - especially the checklist thing. You need 2x gensets so you can confidently take one offline for regular maintenance

You also don't terminate your corporate customers primary fttx and backup LTE links into the same DC - wtf, did this really happen?

What I heard... is that the building generator and the RSAWeb generator were in the same place and the heat from the building generator was blown directly into the RSAWeb generator which, combined with the hottest day of the year, caused the RSAWeb generator to overheat. Or something like that...
