this is my setup now: the router is based in the main building next to the telephone and socket, because cables that came in box is a bit short
i am in the building right next door and connect to router wirelessly but maaaan...i get limited connection and it just does work well.

so i was thinking...if i run a longer dsl cable and connect the router in my apartment rather...will this impact on speed/connection etc???

thanks

Extending a 1km-4km telephone cable by another 50m won't have a noticeable effect on the speed/SNR margins.

Why don't you just install a CAT5e/6 (LAN) cable from the ADSL modem to your apartment instead?

It is better to run fibre between buildings. If you run normal cable between buildings there is a chance that the equipment can be damaged by grounding differences between the building.

Cant you just extend the telephone jack to your building and then just install modem there?
technically you could... but the generally normal telephone cables are un-shielded so there it could lot interference on the line that's why pada suggested cat 5 cables

A few questions
1. Are you using Wireless N or Wireless G (Wireless N has a better coverage area)
2. What router or access point are you using for the wireless?
3. What wireless channel is the router/access point using cause some channels maybe interfered by other devices in the are? (Try selecting one which isn't 1 or 11 since they used more often)
4. How are you receiving the wireless via PC, router or access point and N or G?
5. Both sides should match in the wireless band so if one uses N other should use N same with G to G to give a better connection
6. If Wireless N check if it is 150mbps or 300mbps
7. May help putting a Access point/router in your building to boost the signal

sheets....
1. my apartment is about 20m from the telephone jack, i will run dsl cable through the roof
2. i cannot move the telephone jack it must stay there for the actual telephone..the house is using it.
3. i have a duo plus 300rw router (telkom free 3month trial thing)
4. my channel is set to 1??? what must i select?
5. what do you mean by N or G?? i am receiving wireless via the router
6. i would prefer to have the router in my apartment, then the thing is close enough and i can connect via the yellow network cable.
7. fibre cable??nooooo dont want to go through huge expensis for this 3 months...cos i dont know if i will continue with it afterward
8. what is a cat 5 cable???

Cat 5 is a network cable... it looks like a telephone cable but has a wider plug and thicker cable

Its always better to run a cable, 20 is fine. If it goes outdoors then cover it with something to protect from the elements.

Use cat5 or cat6 if you can. will be much better than wireless period.

ooo se dan so! ha ha haa the box came with a network cable but it is as long as my arm!, and i would prefer to have the router setup in my apartment thus lay a telephone linke cable 20m in the roof in a casing ..will this be ok then?????

I have our router about 20 meters away from the socket but I made my own cable (with Cat5) and I also used 2 wires per connection instead of one.

N or G is the way the wireless Signal is broadcasted to you. You have to check on the router you are connecting up to, to find out what they using.

i will rather have the router with me and then use the arm's length network cable :)
