Running dsl cable instead of using wireless question

question, if one was to make an extension with cat5; which two colours make up a pair? or will you have to strip back a piece and discard it to see/look?

your wireless does not sound like its setup properly tho maybe setting up the wireless properly could save you a heap of trouble

it is properly setup :) i had nice signal until the south easter started to howl! and we have gigantic trees on the yard
the only thing i am not sure about is the channel setting... it was 11, i set it to 1, but looks like it must be something else???

Well I mentioned it must not be 1 or 11 try 6 and I have huge trees here but havent noticed problems getting wireless from the carport which has trees in line of sight.

Goes through 3 walls in my house from router + veranda and manage 2 or 3 bars when using wireless N, but struggle using wireless G with 1 bar.

So sounds like you might be using wireless G then at 54 mbps.

Did you change the channel on the router in the other building? cause changing yours won't help if the other routers signal is being blocked.

1. Can you tell me what your pc says about the wireless signal by right clicking the wireless connection (looks like a computer) in the task bar on the bottom left of your screen. Tell me how many green bars it says for signal strength and the speed in mbps.

Extending it by 20m should have little impact.

It will increase your downstream attenuation reading on the router quite a bit but not sure if it will affect your syncing speed, since it worked fine for me when I tried on my good line.

****s...me at work now but
1. ha ha ha hell ma jou signal moet omtrent bundu bash!
2. i will set the channel to 6
3. we only have the one telkom duoplus 300wr router
4. i have one bar
6. mbps i dont know not infront of laptop now will recheck after setting channel to 6 and also check bars
7. wireless G or N...where do i check that? how can i change it to N?

thank you for all the help so far!

It Seems to me the easiest would be to put a splitter at the the telephone jack and then run an extension from there to where you want to place modem in your building, otherwise if the modem has to stay where it is run a Cat 5 to your PC. Won't be wireless but generally more stable and often faster.

exactly what i want to do..but will change channel setting to 6 first, test it and if no luck will lay a cable...will be more stable im sure..

Did a search on your router and it has bad reviews and uses wireless G can see why your signal is bad now.

You would have to upgrade your router to the TP-Link W8960N 300Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+ Router
http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=1_55_57&products_id=383

It will also increase your adsl line performance and you shouldn't have any problem with getting wireless signal

Since you got 1 bar in wireless G you should get 2 or 3 on the TP-Link wireless N

Could you post what laptop you use so I can see if it is compatable with wireless N or you would need an adapter

The router upgrade is a must, but if your laptop needs an adapter it maybe cheaper to run a cable depending on the cost of installing the cable in the roof although the adapter is only R179 excluding extra costs.

I got both at home and they work 100%

you see the thing is i got it with the telkom 3 month free trial...not much i can do about some thing i got for free to try out...
my laptop is a bit old i was about to check the wifi specs myself and see if it is compatible with N.... :) mecer EL 81 laptop
and.... o yes i run win7 on it..do not use my laptop much though..it came with vista but i upgraded to see how win7 will run :)

the best and cheapest way now is to lay a cable..which i will do myself cos i usually and am used to doing these things myself! ha ha haa :)

Yep but still think about replacing the telkom junk :). There is also windows updates which allowed my laptop to get wireless N instead of wireless G, but not sure if it works for the mecer EL 81 Laptop, but the wireless specs are same as mine so it is possible to get 150 mbps wireless N.

dalk het my vraag meer met jou thread te doen as wat jy dink. ag wel sterkte...

btw the quickest way with least effort would be just to buy a ready-made phone extension and a splitter from checkers. i wouldn't want the router 20m away where i can't see the indicators

ha ha haa i know how to make up a network cable :) yup that is what i am going to do today is buy a 20m ready telephone cable with the jacks on both sides...i dont need a splitter, in the box came a , what they call , a microfilter with 2 ports, one green one red, the green is for the actual telephone wire and the other one is where the extension cable go and then the other end goes into the router...
exactly my point..i want to be able to see the router lights! ha ha ha :)
