S.A. Photography shops.

Hi,
Can anyone recommend good brick and mortar photography shops in or around Alberton?
 
I must say that the only place to buy Photographic equipment is B&H Photo and video in the states. The prices here is SA are just ridiculous!

To give you an example I'm looking to get the Nikon 85mm 1.8 G and it is about R2K more expensive here than there! Even with shipping I can get it cheaper from there.

Other than that their site is fantastic to use and the search tool is great other than 99.9% of other sites.

Anyway enough ranting for now....

If you have to buy in SA I would go with either Orms or Kameraz. Both have great service, Orms is generally cheaper though.
 
Let us know how it worked out in the end in terms of the time to get it to you and the eventual total price you paid. I would definitely want to know. Thanks.
 
I'm planning on upgrading my current DLSR at the end of the month.

I have three options to buy from, and would like to know which one will be the most reliable when doing it by mail order.

My options are, SACamera, ORMS and Kalahari.com The price difference between them is just a couple hundred Rand between the cheapest and most expensive pricing.
 
If the price difference is negligible I would choose Orms then SA Camera then Kalahari. I think Orms has been around the longest and has the most experienced staff. Also see what each will charge for delivery.
 
Do we have a Camera and Lenses bargains thread....? Is it worth creating one seeing as a lot of us are always looking at upgrading or purchasing new gear...?
 
Has anyone purchased camera equipment from Floxizone (http://www.floxizone.co.za/)?
Their equipment (filters, generix batteries etc) seems much cheaper than many of the other stores. They seem to be trading out of the Boksburg Flea Market.

Where is best place to buy Canon DSLR in Pretoria?

Why can't I find Cats Digital Pretoria stores online? Is their website seriously so screwed?

xera - OutdoorPhoto in Pta , ORMS in Sleepy City , Kameraz in Rosebank , JHB . Cats in Brooklyn Mall closed down due to incredibly high prices , so the clever consumers stayed away. You can get good pricing from Game/Makro but nil advice from the sales staff , shop there if you really know what kit you want.

What Canon DSLR are you looking to get and how much can you spend ? I'd suggest a 650D bundle for starters , go for the 18-55 + 50 + 75-300mm lenses. Also get to know the diff's regarding EF and EFS lenses.
 
and Makro has a special for today. Canon 600D bundle.

Thanks for advice, I'm thinking of forking out and getting Canon EOS 6D with so-called "kit" lens EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM, and maybe Prime lens EF 50mm f/1.4 USM later.
Photography is something I'm passionate about, so think this would be a good buy?
Wikidpedia has helped a lot familiarizing myself with all the terminology ;)
 
Go with the 6D then - L lens series is Canon's best . Grab a nifty fifty as well ( 50mm f1.8 ) aka fantastic plastic. And add a Sigma EX 120-300 f2.8 plus TC's later on.
 
For a wee bit more you can get a kit that has the newer 24-70mm f/4 L IS. You lose a bit of range but the optics are apparently better. I love it but I haven't shot with the older 24-105.

I also bought the new Sigma 35mm ART lens. Wow, this one is pretty awesome.
