SA bans leopard hunting in 2016

No against all and any forms of hunting of wild animals. Culling is just a cop out when people aren't prepared to pay to redistribute animals instead of killing them.

and its moral issue as far as I am concerned so there will be no convincing me ever of the "values" of hunting wild animals.

How will the game farmer make money out of the animals on his farm if they cannot be hunted?

I assume you only eat meat from animals that died of old age in green pastures?

EDIT:

OT: I fully agree with the ban on leopard hunting, we need to protect our endangered species.

Conservation/tourism over any hunting as far as I am concerned...

No I just don't eat wild animal meat. Distinction here is wild animal not domesticated.

Luckily no one needs to convince you of anything, facts are facts, if you don't want to believe them that's your problem.
So just to poke more at this "Culling is just a cop out" opinion of yours where do you suggest they move animals to if I may ask?

There is plenty of areas around the globe where animals could be moved if people cared more about the animals then about $$...

But they taste so good: biltong, drywors, venison neck poitjie, bush pig cabernossi. Hmmmm yum :D

Excellent news!

Hunting an animal that you're not going to eat must be the stupidest, cruelest thing someone can do.

Trophy hunting should be banned.

Why don't they cull humans?

There are over 7 BILLION of them...why are humans never overpopulated, but somehow animals are?

Humans need to stop having so many goddamn children...

Culling is just a cop out when people aren't prepared to pay to redistribute animals instead of killing them.

So, if the elephant population in the Kruger grows too large, you will financially assist them to redistribute the excess elephants?

According to National Geographic and Wiki, the leopard is not yet threatened, but "near threatened", with declining population. Based on that I'm glad for the ban, as it might help prevent the further decline of the population. I suspect that farmers whose livestock are being taken by leopards will not welcome the decision, though.

There is only so much area devoted to the conservation of these animals. You cannot be this unreasonable. There are situations and species which we simply cannot allow to proliferate in an uncontrolled manner. They would destroy the ecosystem. I understand that the reason it is like that is because we have tampered with that ecosystem but the fact remains that we're in this situation now and we need to do our best to preserve what we have left. Like it or not hippy that includes culling.

Morally I don't have an issue with hunting as long as it isn't causing environmental damage or undue stress to the animals being hunted. Killing an Impala for example puts about as much pressure on the Impala populations of the world as killing a single human being. Allowing those Impala to proliferate though and decimate the ecosystem because we're too squeamish to take responsibility for what we've done to this planet, now that would be a moral outrage.

Maybe if you stop looking at animals like some sort of product and more of a living creature, then hunting will look rather daft?

I'm anti-hunting. I think it's a disgusting "sport" where a living creature is killed for pleasure.

Culling is unnecessary...there isn't that many animals anywhere where culling is needed. They can be redistributed to other areas. Africa is huge.

People take up WAY more space than any animal or conservation areas.

They're often the same thing. Often we can do more for conservation by culling an animal that is in excess and using the money gained from that to help save something under more pressure as opposed to devoting equal resources to saving every individual animal regardless of the importance of that individual with regards to preserving the species. What you propose is idiocy and anti-conservation in the long term.

Then I don't understand the moral outrage. If you're fine with accepting that a cow can die to feed people then you shouldn't have an issue with excess Impala being killed to feed people. At least the Impala's death brings in money to further the conservation of more at threat species.

There is plenty of areas around the globe where animals could be moved if people cared more about the animals then about $$...
Again I say that some animals are so abundant and easy to maintain as a species that saving individuals simply isn't a good enough return on the investment. Instead take the money you would have spent saving that Impala and save an endangered animal instead.

but the guy I'm responding to doesn't think like that. He still eats meat. He still sees animals as products if they're domesticated but not if they're wild. He isn't consistent.

I disagree that culling is unnecessary if you want to efficiently use your money to save as many species as possible. The unfortunate reality is that we simply don't have enough money in conservation to save all of them. Worse is that saving every individual animal would long term just destroy the environment as we've driven apex predators into threatened statuses while their prey proliferates uncontrollably.

It costs similar money to move that Impala as it does to move a threatened animal. If you can't afford to save both, or if it is environmentally destructive to save them both, then rather cull the Impala and use the money from that to fund the saving of the threatened animal.

I'll sign up to cull humans, but that's illegal, for now, maybe that will change.

Nope, there are defiantly not plenty of areas where one can dump animals, where did you come up with that?

You clearly haven't got a clue what you are talking about.

I still don't like the idea of killing something just because there are too many of them. Someone killing a living being doesn't gel with me.

I am vegan as well due to the fact.

Does this mean there is a higher chance of me finding leopards in my wallet?

You'd be lucky if you have a dirty rhino to pay for parking.

You clearly haven't got a clue what you are talking about.

Why don't we cull humans? Because it's inhumane.

So why do we do it to animals? They cause way less harm to the planet than humans who keep on breeding like rats.

So you don't understand the concept of kill one so others can survive?

I'm so glad you donate to wildnerness preservation societies every month and taking up game ranging in the kruger park as you care more about the animals than $$$.

Much better than sitting behind a keyboard complaining about other people.

Unfortunately as far as I can see we're largely responsible for the current state of the environment. Letting it fall apart now would be irresponsible. Saying that we don't want to kill things on principle, knowing that that could likely be a death sentence to many ecosystems and the multitude of species that reside in it, strikes me as irresponsible and a sherking of our duties. We must manage it to ensure it stays in at least the semblance of balance we have managed to achieve at this point, perhaps even improve it if we can practically achieve that.

The positive I take from this is at least we've realised that we're devastating the equilibrium of the planet and some of us at least are trying to do something about it. Our ancestors were happy with believing it was a world of infinite resources to be exploited.

I think if one is going to take the stance you're taking this is the logical conclusion. I understand where you're coming from. I just don't think we have the luxury of sticking to principles if we wish to preserve our ecosystems moving into the future.
