SA committed to hosting Square Kilometer Array (SKA)

It is more an intangible benefit due to increased Science and Technology industries in the country...

Things like ROACH being developed in SA, and now being used in a few observatories around the world, and also being a system at the forefront of FPGA systems.

Don't worry you won't have to cough up the whole €1.5bn, funding is from many international parties.

Who will build and pay for the SKA and how much will it cost?

SKA is a €1.5 billion project, with operating costs of about €100 million a year. At least 24 organisations from 12 countries, including Australia, Canada, India, China, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, the Netherlands, the UK and the USA, are involved. Europe is expected to fund 40% of the project, with a comparable amount from the USA. The balance will be funded by the other countries involved in the project.

I saw that, but it's so vague, ponder. What "organisations"? Why don't they say explicitly? Are they afraid if the bulk of it is from governments that people will notice they're throwing their cash at a pet project in Africa while we're on the verge of the greatest depression in history?
 
OK, scanning through the articles on this subject, I came across a figure of 15 BILLION Rand...

Allow me a minute, if I may...

All I EVER hear from the ANC/government is the plight of the poor. The poor this, the poor that...***** "the poor".

I am also forced to endure ridiculous amounts of abuse to my car through the use of the tracks they call roads in ZA.

The figure bandied about for fixing the national road network is 30 BILLION Rand - double the SKA amount.

No big project underaken by the ANC/government has ever been completed anywhere near the original estimate afaik. Think Gautrain for one. GFIP for another.

WtF are building satellites when we could fix half of our roads decently, fix the water supply, close the borders, sort out the economy, etc.?

SKA? Screw that idea.

May I suggest you go and actually READ the articles regarding the SKA...

The funding is not coming solely from SA ffs.

You need to work on your comprehension skills :D

Of the R15bn EU countries are to contribute 40% with the USA contributing about the same percentage. The remaining 20% (R3bn) is covered by Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Japan, Korea, New Zealand & South Africa of which the lions share will probably come from the asian countries.
