SA committed to hosting Square Kilometer Array (SKA)

I've been fortunate to meet quite a few of the engineers working on this project, great bunch of people and all seem very committed and and capable. Really hope we get it, a lot of hard work has gone into this.

I wonder if the proponents of this enterprise can help me identify what the origin of the funding is for it?

Personally my guess is that both Aus and SA will get to host bits of the SKA.....

It just makes more sense to me to spread it as far over the globe as possible.

Radio waves huh? Don't worry guys, I'm on it.

Thank god. This sort of thing is really an essential for our engineering and science sector. The sheer tech output from these projects is impressive because you putting so many great minds together, and welcoming innovation :).

Ja but that does not line BEE/AA pockets.

Question is rather does South Africa offer what the International players want? To be committed is one thing to actually be successful is another thing altogether and JuJu is not helping much.

Heard last week that Australia and New zealand teamed up to link a few radio telescopes for a demonstration. Just to give a little bit of a taste of the resolution of the telescope. Really hope we get it though.
Does anybody know when the final choice will be made? I've been hearing about this project for years but no indication on when it will be finalized.

And that is a reason why our govt will likely give this project little support!

Except you're very very very very wrong on that..

This project has massive support from the government already.

Support is one thing, when they say it... when it comes to the money its another thing entirely.
Knowing the ANC, they're only in it for the ill gotten gains they can get out of anything/everything, so I remain sceptical!

SA did something similar using meerKAT and HARTRAO.

Decision will be made in February 2012.

Sorry but nope again you're very very very very wrong, they've already invested large quantities of money into trying to secure the project for SA.

The Department of Science and Technology is very aware of the importance that SKA could have for this country.
