SA companies launch rival GMail.co.za

I managed to sign up for fun. I even clicked on a banner ad which took me to "Error 404 Page Not Found". LOL! Let's see how much rubbish I get as a 17-tear old techy-teen!
 
As far as I understand, you can't ride on the success of Google's Gmail and just change the domain - its misleading, and people will actually think its google - and in turn give google the bad name! - Very shady!
 
Gmail

This is blatant, in-your-face profiteering off another company's hard work. I hope Google comes down on them like a ton of bricks.
 
Google has an army of lawyers, most of them dealing with copyright infringement - think of YouTube, their book scanning etc. I'm really interested to see how long gmail.co.za lasts.
 
whateva... don't see anyone staying with GMail.co.za way to inferior and intrusive..
eventually they will sell out or close the shop...

the ambiguous name is annoying thought

+1 so true , the last time I checked they were using Squirrel mail as a client.
 
I wonder if you're actually able to use your full 10GB ? Or whether this is simply overselling?

Wonder if you could "back up" 10GB of files and then download them from several locations using local-only ADSL?

Not that I condone the idea :p
 
By J3sus's balls I have no idea why South Africans always do this. Trade mark infringement or passing off law suit here we come. I wonder if Google has registered their TM's here already... they must have... even with the three / four year process in South Africa...

Its this Gmail / Gmail, and there is also the new AirTime Airlines to SAA's 1Time... I think the Airtime arilines one is worse though, because if you have the money to buy a fleet of passengers planes, then surely you have two things... the first being a few spare thousand rand lying around to at the very least run your intended name past a IP Lawyer, and second of all, the business acumen to know that the first step is necessary... But there is actually also a third thing.. common sense to know that you cant copy a competitor and use the word "Time" in the name of airline.. a word which otherwise has no bearing on the concept of flight?!?!

But google may not even take any action. By choosing the name, these guys have also shot themselves in the foot. How the hell can you compete with google. They might be able to meet the promise of 10 gigs of storage... cause they will need 50 gigs of storage for teh five people who will sign up over the next two years!

What do they need that much information for? When I signed up for Google Mail, I never got asked for a plethora of information... maybe it's somebody's way to harvest people's information?
 
Regarding the domain name - there is a precedent.

Remember Little Caesars? And that they have to change their name to Romans...

So this will be interesting to watch.
 
That is just to many details for a free webmail service.
why would a webmail provider need BEE and Income and all those pref?
and did anyone notice the default security question? then you need 3 more numbers for a compete ID number.

Just out of interest sake what else (that this registration does not ask) do you need to apply for a store account?
 
Having read the comments about webmail on hellopeter (thx rwenzori) there's no way I'll let them handle or even get near my email. Ever!
 
Ha Ha as far as my understanding if Gmail even blink at the co.za domain Internic will take it away, because it is domain name encroachment.
 
Webmail sucked before, and I doubt whether it will become better with a new name! :rolleyes:

Sucky thing is, when webmail was launched years ago, it was nice. Then the small group of developers got bought out by a corporate, and things immediately started going down the tubes... Now I don't even use it anymore! It's full of bugs, and doesn't work 50% of the time, and the amount of spam is so bad that normal mail disappears! :(

Well it's not internic, but Uniforum. Sadly co.za is not co-operating at giving me a whois for gmail.co.za, but if it was registered before Google's gmail came into existence ( I think it was from my prior attempt at co.za ) ie: 1 April 2004, it might be safe. Google does not have rights to the gmail domain in Germany or Switzerland, remember, based on prior use.

Can anyone else get a whois?
