Zondo slams Ramaphosa

Former Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa for his failure to act on State Capture findings.

As reported by the Sunday Times, Zondo said that it pained him when he had to swear in cabinet ministers who had severe state capture findings against them.

“It was like the president was saying, ‘I don’t care what you have found about these people. I think they are good enough to be promoted,” said Zondo to the paper.

1,400 individuals were implicated. It produced six reports, exposing corruption at PRASA, SSA and SABC, and calling for prosecutions, further probes, and systemic reforms.

Ramaphosa accepted most of the findings in October 2022 and implemented some changes, such as making leadership changes at SARS and freezing R14 billion in assets.

However, prosecutions have been low, with only 51 of those implicated facing criminal charges.

Kunene is still the same thug he was before politics. So, he's probably still involved with the same criminal element he was friends with before putting on a suit that didnt make him look like a clown at a tavern.

Even besides that, the line between criminals and business people is very thin these days, so if you are into some form of business, especially in the kind of entertainment industry he is in, you will probably be meeting with criminals who are also business people every second day, whether you are meeting for criminal purposes or other purposes.

I still believe the promptness in resigning is informed by knowing there won't be anything to pin on him, so both him and Gayton have decided to milk it for maximum political gain.

The same in SA. You live in appalling conditions thanks to the ANC, but warm and fuzzy struggle memories make you vote for them again. Cue toyi toyi-ing.

The sad truth
Zondo also has his doubts about the upcoming National Dialogue in South Africa, as it likely will not focus on the nation’s largest challenges.


Announced by Ramaphosa, the National Dialogue aims to be a place where South Africans from all walks of life can shape the next chapter of democracy.


A national Convention is taking place in August and will set the agenda for the National Dialogue.


Zondo has reservations over the National Dialogue, saying that basic failings in the country can be fixed without the need for a forum.


He doesn’t believe that a National Dialogue is necessary and is more concerned that “municipalities have competent people who are doing their job.”


“I’m concerned about the interference, even in municipalities. I’m concerned about hospitals. People are going to hospitals and not finding doctors, nurses, or medicines.”

I can agree with the first two points; the third won't really work in our setup.

But it doesn't matter anyway, you need 66% in NA to amend the Constitution and 6/9 provinces in the NCOP. Even if everyone except the ANC unites and votes for this bill, they'll have 60%. The cadres would never vote for this.

And even if by some twist of fate, it passes through the NA, the NCOP will probably block it, seeing that ANC still controls 6 provinces.

I actually don't agree with any of them.
There was ways to hold ministers accountable which are not being used.
Changing it won't fix anything

I would prefer changing the electoral system to what zondo proposed

I generally actually disagree. We don't need more process to hold people accountable, just implement what already exists...

If I was an opposition party I woukd ask myself serious questions, but ke we know, it's much easier to insult the voter.

Here's where I disagree with you.

I don't see the point of DMs that much, and it's better to have a mechanism to remove a single delinquent Minister than having to opt for a MONC in the entire Cabinet or the President to do the same thing. Although I think that mechanism should be similar to S89:

89) Removal of President​

(1) The National Assembly, by a resolution adopted with a supporting vote of at leasttwo thirds of its members, may remove the President from office only on thegrounds of—
(1a) - a serious violation of the Constitution or the law;
(1b) - serious misconduct; or
(1c) - inability to perform the functions of office.
(2) Anyone who has been removed from the office of President in terms of subsection(1)(a) or (b) may not receive any benefits of that office, and may not serve in anypublic office.

Zondo? Zondo did propose electoral changes. A move to mixed-member proportional representation (basically the municipal electoral system) and direct presidential elections...
