Better technologies require better internships. Computer diagnosis of cars did not result in less mechanics or auto electricians.

Add to that the fact that one could get experienced people from neighbouring countries at a fraction of cost of training and acquiring local talent.

Telkom's needs changed partly as a result of these changes. Same can be said about others.

Of course ANC governments made spectacularly terrible decisions along the way but to blame this solely on them is a little disingenuous.

The country took the view before 1994 that skilled labour was a requirement. Hence why it used it's entities to provide it for the country. It was a long term view with major benefits for the country as a whole.
A lot of the skilled labour then migrated into the private sector after 6 years and made room for new apprenticeships
That changed post 1994.

You have a very singular and blinkered view.
Look at Telkom
In those days there were no other real communication companies.
These days Telkom may be smaller, but if you count the number of employees in ALL companies in that space you will find more employed now than then

That is not an internship or apprenticeship
They have a requirement that you allready have a degree/diploma

The programs I am referring to was for high school leavers to join gov departments who then determined if you would do a program in uni/college while being employed and then do a payback period afterwards
Ie there was no requirement for past experience or education other than school

The setup of the tooling in CNC machines cannot be done by machines. The result is as good as the employee who does the setup. Who do you think maintains the industrial process machines? Definitely not other machines.

While I do agree , this was not based wholely on what the individual company needed. It was on what the country needed. Skilled labour
Also currently :
Eskom is roughly the same now as in 1994 in no employees
Transnet has not modernised. They just run a fraction of railways compared to what they used to
Telkom is a lot smaller as a whole , but the Comunications sector is a lot bigger
And you could go on

Some people reading this will be comparing it to the old SADF, where we had a lot fewer Generals. There was a change in the 90s when Brigadiers when now defined as Generals (the specific rank was Brigadier General). Apparently this was for interaction with some other military forces in the UN to bring our ranks into alignment with theirs. The majority of general offices in the SANDF are the Brigadier type. This is actually how the ranks were originally in the SADF after the union, when the Brigadier rank was carved out as a separate one during WWII for interoperability with British forces at the time.

We still seem to have too many people clustered at the top end of the rank scale. It looks like this started when the SADF integrated with other forces like MK and the homelands. The senior people in these forces were happy with the deal on condition that they received high ranks. Now we need to wait for the remaining ones to shuffle off.
 
ANC struggles to fill up 20K-capacity North West stadium

The once glorious ANC on Saturday struggled to fill up a 20,000-capacity stadium in the North West.

This is where the oldest liberation party in Africa was celebrating 114 years of its existence in its annual pilgrimage known as the ANC January 8 Statement.

At the time of the resumption of the official programme at 12h30 after the arrival of party president Cyril Ramaphosa, there were thousands of empty chairs inside the Moruleng Stadium in the outskirts of Rustenburg.

The failure to fill up the stadium on Saturday is in contrast to about 15 years ago, when ANC supporters would fully occupy two stadiums at once with ease for the same event or an equivalent, such as an election manifesto.
