SA Post Office Strike

My package posted from Cape Town to Bloemfontein on the 13th of September has still not moved an inch.

Not one to wish hardships on others, but I really hope the whole lot at the post office lose their jobs and have to beg in the streets for a living.

I hope SAPO burns to the ground - everywhere.

A slightly positive update :D :

Update on operations
Mail services in the Eastern, Northern and Western Cape are normal. Mail services in KwaZulu-Natal are also normal.
Mail processing in Gauteng has resumed at most major mail centres and the mail is flowing again.
A total of 30 post offices in the Wits region are closed for repairs after they were vandalised by strikers.
In Tshwane, the majority of people are back at work with 3 post offices closed for repairs after they were vandalised.
Krugersdorp hub is not operational.
In the Free State, Welkom mail centre is not working at full capacity. All post offices in the Central Region are open.
In Polokwane, mail is expected to start moving today, although 22 branches in Limpopo are closed with staff on strike.
Lastly, the Johannesburg International Mail Centre is not working at optimal capacity.

Doesn't help us... our entire branch (where we have our business post box) is still closed for repairs.
When I drive past there everything is shut and all the windows are smashed in.

But to put things into perspective, Lyttelton Post Office was blown up by right wingers in the lead up to the election in the '90's.

It took nearly a year to re-build! So it's not just strikers that cause damage.

I am reminded by my wife that my daughters final primary school report was amongst the casualties.

Had an envelope posted in the US on 22 September with USPS and according to the guy I spoke to this morning at JIMC, the envelope hasn't arrived in the country.

I asked him whether it was possible that it was still in a pile that hadn't been booked in yet and he said yes.

I live in hope!

When this is working is when things are back to semi normal.

Another day of a country's national postal service not functioning. Nothing in the news. Nobody gives a crap except those affected (customers).

Was able to check my post box today, but there was nothing in it... after at least a month.

Centurion seems to be up and running. We have had post in our box two days running now. My wife is contacting each sender to use EMail in future.

Car licence renewals will continue to be a problem until they join the rest of the world in the 21st Century, and enable an online option.

Maybe the striking SAPO workers can make some cash shovelling coal at Majuba

I saw a post office truck at the filling station this morning with about 6 guys on bicycles getting the post for their bikes to go deliver them for that suburb. Is the strike over?

Yesterday I picked up mail for my mom at the Vanderbijlpark post office. Miraculously - there was mail. But the interesting thing I noticed was the inside of the post-box. You can see the inside of the sorting room and the niches for the other wall of mailboxes.
Every closed mailbox is covered with a Red Notice 'Mailbox not in use'.
The entire other wall was red, with only about 5 boxes in use.

OOh, there was movement on my package at the Johannesburg International Mail Centre. I wonder if it is open now for me to pick up my parcel? Anyone been there today?

This is a quote from the facebook page:

Sally Wheelwright Sidenberg I have just been to the JIMC - you can collect boxes if you have the Local tracking number and the shelf number (that u get by phoning 086 111502. The good news is that I went in to get some of my boxes [the rest I have no local tracking no}The Centre is congested but looked quite ordered.....nothing is trashed or damaged!!! There are very few staff there....but the ones that helped me were polite and helpful!!! They managed to locate my other boxes which are still bagged waiting to get local tracking no's and to be assesed by customs!!!! So be assured your stuff is SAFE!!!

So sounds like JIMC might be open. Does anyone have a physical address for this center? I'm thinking of just going to collect my parcels as well
