SA Post Office Strike

I have spies :p

We do daily bulk mail deliveries at the major depots in SA, so they have to keep us up to date on what's happening and if we can deliver or not.
LOL, sorry. Just very strange that the post office don't put out a press release but communicate to certain customers. Will take your work though.

Maybe they're waiting to see if things go tits up again, before they share the news.

Maybe they have limited capacity and wish to restore service to their preferred clients. Regular Joes like us are lower priority.

So any news? Apparently the unions are supposed to respond today to the 6 percent hike. They wanted 15%.

My parcel still hasn't moved according to the tracking.

Parcel number EJxxxxxxxJP was not found in the database!
Please check your parcel number and re-enter if it is incorrect.
If your number is correct and your parcel details do not appear, please call our help desk.

It usually takes 3-4 days to appear on the SA system.

Oh well it's fully insured.

To claim insurance the sending Post Office needs a response from SAPO saying the parcel hasn't been delivered etc, good luck with that.
I already sent through a query with USPS and the response was that SAPO have not responded to USPS and until they do they can't proceed.

It will be the shipper's problem. Not my problem.

If you paid with PayPal I hope you know the onus is on the shipper to prove you received your item. PayPal will refund you and then it's his problem to make a claim with his postal service. My situation is different but the company in question should usually refund or reship first and handle the insurance later.

Affected areas

Greater Johannesburg: most of the mail centers are operational, but not at full capacity.
Tshwane: Not operating at any significant level.
Polokwane: Started experiencing issues on Friday, 26 September, affecting deliveries across Limpopo. SAPO is bypassing the Polokwane mail center to deliver to smaller towns in the area.
Bloemfontein: City is experiencing problems, but SAPO is bypassing the Bloemfontein mail center to deliver to smaller towns in the area.
All other cities and provinces: Only affected by mail coming from or going to the affected areas.

If the strike is illegal the workers should all have been dismissed.

That won't happen. Union rights are more important than customers' rights. You pay money you get nothing back. In other countries, that's called THEFT, in SA it's a Western paradigm. ;)

The decline is well at hand. Only several years to go before a total Banana republic.

Update on the industrial action
Mail processing has resumed in Gauteng with the exception of Krugersdorp and Tshwane sorting centres. We are looking to implement alternative plans to get operations going in these centres. Unfortunately intimidation of post office staff in Gauteng and Polokwane continues, and some outlets still had to be closed. No arrests have been made yet for the arson at Yeoville post office, but the SA Police has firm leads and are hopeful that arrests will be made soon. Meanwhile, talks with the leadership of the striking union continue daily.

POST OFFICE VEHICLES TORCHED IN SOWETO

Vehicles belonging to the SA Post Office (Sapo) have been set alight outside the Sapo building in Chiawelo, Soweto, on Tuesday, said Johannesburg emergency services.

"Two delivery bakkies and two minibuses belonging to the post office were torched around 1pm this [Tuesday] afternoon," said spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

The Sapo building was not affected in the incident and no injuries were reported.

No arrests had been made but Mulaudzi said the people involved in the incident were believed to be striking Sapo workers.

The nearly two-month-old strike is about the conversion of casual workers to permanent staff.
