Sa Sucks closing down on Friday.

o the Irony!

Who has such a culture?:O

I just don't know how without really playing a semantics game we can deny there is a strong element of this in Afrikaans culture. It's a criticism that if you don't like to need to take on board and change rather than be so defensive about. Be a human being first and an Afrikaaners second. Sokkie to constatina music and eat vetkoek to your hearts content. Diversity is a wonderful thing. But this rigid racism and animosity to other people groups that is prevelent needs to be worked on.

Forget black people, even as a soutie I've often been made unwelcome in parts of country. It's an unpleasant and unsophisticated way of thinking and has no place in the modern world. A way of thinking that has been at the heart of nearly every conflict through out history. We need to think less in terms of us and them and more as individuals. Not to classify each other by trivial labels.

The problem of being too defensive about your culture , or yourself for that matter is the ability to see your flaws in an objective ways. In order to be self aware and empathetic of others we need to see ourselves for out person flaws , so we can be more tolerant of those in others.

People still sokkie?.. to be honest, you know nothing about Afrikaners (if you stereotype them with the sokkie type). Both diversity and racism in this country cannot exist without the other.

They don't want you around because they do not like you (if you blabber the same crap that you do on this forum). Its not because you are a soutie (but hey that give them even more reason to not like you).

We acknowledge we have flaws, but not everyone appreciate the liberal values.

You're providing a perfect example of someone with no sense of irony.
... Wrong again, I just discovered someone that is a perfect example of hypocrisy.

Or is your pretence of tolerance and being opposed to "racism" also irony?

lol. Yup, but that wasn't the point. The point was I fully encourage people to celerate and practice their culture. I like the fact that the world is full of diverse cultures. Some Afrikaans seem to not enjoy it as much and seem to rather wish everyone would f-off.

No , no. I'm quite pleasant to be around. I have plenty of Afrikaans family. I know about the distaste for souties.

We acknowledge we have flaws, but not everyone appreciate the liberal values

Yeah. No need to tell me. You designed a system to legally enforce segregation. You even made told people who they could or couldn't have sex with. I know you don't like the "liberal culture." Trust me , I know.

lol ,take it easy Atlas. I have explained it is my opinion that being proud of your "race" is fine with until you are so proud you hate and don't tolerate other people who don't share them.

Dude ...get out of your hole....ever visit France??? Try asking for directions or anything in English....The French are way worse than the "Afrikaners" when it comes to hating "others"...

I seriously suggest that people wake up. SA does suck..but its still not as bad as living in Iraq or Dafur so for the time being suck it up or leave

And yes I'm white and yes I have been robbed..so BLAH BLAH BLAH what!! Its part of the risk of living in a @#$% SA so just suck it up or p#@$ of

!!!!FFS!!!!

To Mods: apologies for the tone but really ..these junior kiddies still trolling these old dried up dead topics is making me so very very naaaaaaar.

Disclaimer: anothe un PC post

I actually grew up in a very liberal family, conservative neighbourhood. Not many of us fit in the Afrikaner "vir Volk en Vaderland" pride speech, but this is just the way kids are taught to think. You can't really accuse the Afrikaner of brainwashing their children, its not a cult the believe that different things don't mix, as simple as that its their way, as outdated as it might seem. If they do mix then their language and heritage is at risk.

They have their place and we have our place, we both can co-exist.

Havent you got any responses to my reply to your topic.

I mean Afrikaaners are against integration right. You said there are the Frieslanders and the Dutch and that is proof that integration is diffucult. Ok you also said the French are proud and so are the Dutch and the Germans.

Yet the Afrikaaner nation is the result of the integration of Dutch, Frieslanders and the French . You have Afrikaans surnames like Le Roux (French Hugenot descent) and then Dutch names Stander and Van Wyk like Frisian names such as Friesland lol etc etc.

Is not the Afrikaaner nation the product of the integration of other cultures. It is still a baby culture but now it wants to throw up Boere pride, yet there are many other cultures which have integrated themselves for hundreds if not thousands of years to from the modern world as we know it. Its called change my friend.

The truth is that the whole Afrikaaner nation was affected negatively by Apartheid and its actually skewed their views and threw white pride into the culture which now manifests itself into this "we won't integrate ".

Meanwhile behind the scenes many Afrikaans girls are actually engaging in sexual activities with "darker" men. I have seen it happen on campus. They won't "go out" with black guys but they are lets just say curious. But they can't dare take a black boyfriend home so they go with the flow with their families and the Afrikaaner men at their churches or in their communities.

The proper Afrikaaners were the ones that existed around the turn of the century. I admire the stories of bravery and determination they showed against all odds. They were also not afraid to integrate then. The current generation of post Apartheid Afrikaaner is a confused one.

Everyone must wake up and realise that these old fashion ideas are just contradicting themselves at the end of the day.

Give it time though and in a a few decades things will be so different that the hardliners of today will be very upset. But its called progress.

That basically sums up what I am trying to say as well.

Ironically a lot of people who don't like the "liberal culture" also despise 7de Laan because of the way it shows people of all colours getting along and integrating in the predominantly Afrikaans town of Hillside. Where race isn't the issue and rather human nature is what makes things happen.

Hillside is the South Africa we should be living in the South Africa of the future and it indeed shows the desirable and wonderful part of Afrikaans culture that needs preserving. Not this bitter hatred that is brewing in real life.

Watching 7de Laan gives me hope for the future of SA.

That's not exactly what you said:

Remember the same guy said something general and negative about (South) Korea not long ago.

For some people Afrikaaners are synonymous with ignorant people. Of course that's no different to when other people equate blacks with ignorance. But some people don't see their own bigotry. ;)

Don't worry about it.

Every culture is guilty of this. Some are just more open about it than others. What you say is not unique to Afrikaaners at all and is prevalent amongst Blacks themselves (among races, between local blacks born in an area and newcomers from other areas [ other areas of SA ], xenophobia of local blacks to foreign blacks, among whites, between Muslim and Christian coloureds and so on. Your POV is definately against diversity. You want everyone to be like you. I don't know if the world would be a better place if everyone was like you though.

I can attest that many English people have the same problem you speak of.
You're English speaking, you have a pro-English Bias. It's very obvious.

The problem of being too defensive about your culture , or yourself for that matter is the ability to see your flaws in an objective ways.

BEST ADVICE you could give yourself.

In order to be self aware and empathetic of others we need to see ourselves for out person flaws , so we can be more tolerant of those in others.

Again, practice what you preach.

They called him therooster, Humility and Objectivity were his strong points. :)

Dude, lighten up. You have many a chip on your shoulder. You don't like Afrikaaners. You don't like whites. You didn't like Korea. You don't like big business. You don't like doctors. Get over yourself.

.

Did I say it was only Afrikaans culture ? See ? So defensive and paranoid again. You're deeply hurt I'm criticised what you perceieve ti be your culture. It's like you define yourself by it. Groupthink. Go ahead and offend the British or whatever you percieve me to align myself with. I wouldn't give a toss. I'm an individual and not definded by anything other than myself. A sophisticated organism capable of manipulating my environment rather than it manipulate me.

No. I have a post-modern bias andperspective. Been trendy for a while now.

I like everyone brother. You're clearly the one with the chip with all the insults and random alse assumptions.

Except Feminists of course. Feminists can go to hell.

well yes, they are a combanation of german, dutch , frieslanders and french, but remember, their nationality was founded in SA. The Dutch government left them to be govern under English rule, but I don't get your point.

The french were part of a barbarian Frank tribe against the romans - they have their pride.

The Germans were goths and normans - They are allowed to be proud?

The English were a mixture of well, romans, goths, celts and they have british pride?

Not all change is good, the greeks are still alive after 2500 years, they did not intergrate :) Some cultures did it and their old values died out (rome comes to mind). We do not want that to happen.

The truth is that the whole Afrikaaner nation was affected negatively by Apartheid and its actually skewed their views and threw white pride into the culture which now manifests itself into this "we won't integrate ".
The segregation police is older then apartheid - to be frank it started when the Afrikaner came into existence. The 'we dont integrate ' policy is very old, it kept the Afrikaner from changing of course integration did take place, but the majority stayed.

Meanwhile behind the scenes many Afrikaans girls are actually engaging in sexual activities with "darker" men. I have seen it happen on campus. They won't "go out" with black guys but they are lets just say curious. I actually saw this more among the English girls, we had a saying that you can revive an Englishmen by telling 'meidt' next to his grave 3 days later. I have seen a few Afrikaner girls trying out darker types, but as you said its been rejected. hence I don't believe integration works. The black families are also not so fond of his new girlfriend.

The proper Afrikaaners were the ones that existed around the turn of the century. I admire the stories of bravery and determination they showed against all odds. They were also not afraid to integrate then. The current generation of post Apartheid Afrikaaner is a confused one.
Not quite true, the segregation policy was put in place by Cecil John Rhodes.

Everyone must wake up and realise that these old fashion ideas are just contradicting themselves at the end of the day.
how so ? or is anything none-liberal considered to be old fashioned nowadays?

Give it time though and in a a few decades things will be so different that the hardliners of today will be very upset. But its called progress.

your quite an optimist, imho it wont happen for about 3-4 generations, but that time I should be 6 feet under.

I wouldn't know I am not one for soap operas, but as far as I am concerned people will get along on with different cultures, but mixing and social mixing? not gonna happen any time soon.

You make use of Afrikaans pet names (ballie, soutie, broekie etc) and you've used "Afrikaans" or "Afrikaaner" many times in your post - in fact exclusively.
I think you're intelligent enough to known this without further explanation.

I'm not Afrikaans BTW, I don't feel the least hurt. I just like to point out hypocrisy and bigotry.

No. I have a post-modern bias andperspective. Been trendy for a while now.

You're just another malcontent, bitter, internet forum poster. ;) Just like the rest of us. Don't make yourself into some sort of conscience of the white oppressor nation. Know any black people btw?

I like everyone brother. You're clearly the one with the chip with all the insults and random alse assumptions.

I have no chips. I like everyone. I say it how it is. We've heard your laments numerous times here. You don't like whites who are discontent with the way things are (they should shut up), you spread disinformation about HIV/AIDS, you've singled out Afrikaaners, you want handouts from the developed world with no strings attached, you moaned how Korea sucks, you don't like doctors because they don't work for free while you obviously do, etc.

Except Feminists of course. Feminists can go to hell.

Well of course, considering that many Comrades only give lip service to women's rights, you will say so. ;)

You have a good memory lol. Well I am adaptive because I have changed my opinion about South Korea, I based my judgement on one or two Korean people's behaviour. I have since met many more and would now like to go and visit there someday and have become fascinated with their culture society. Especially their quality of life and high tech society.

However my views on Afrikaaners is based on a pattern I see repeating over and over and over again. If I am a bigot or hippocritical in any way I am not afraid to admit it. Yes I speak out against segregation talk yet in another thread I was complaining about Nigerians and Somalians. I won't deny that. That is however an issue that is in a totally different context from this issue in this thread, which is something that can undermine the whole country because of the deeper social wrongs its causing.

I am not an Afrikaaner hater at all no way. I am just pointing out a root problem with the Afrikaaner viewpoint that is outdated and not of value in modern society any more.
