SA Teachers Set Absentee Record

Well what sort of accountability is there currently? They know that they are protected if there isn't sufficient proof.

There is proof. They were not there. there were witnesses that they were not there. They will just find a reason to say the bio-metrics is false. OR break it.

What do you propose then? What would be the answer? There are multiple reports of bio-metrics reducing absenteeism. Obviously you know something more than they do.

I know how people that doesn't want to work and clock in on time smash the equipment, then you place cameras and they smash those. All that works is to replace the people, when new people are introduced to a system like this they adapt quicker.
You bribe the administrator and he logs you in at a time you were not at school. That system is just as corruptible.

Do you think that teachers that has not worked in the last 10 years are now going to come to school bright eyed and bushy tailed ? You think that they will not find a way to by pass this? they will not take lightly to this.

You are privileged not to work with extreme lazy and morally corrupt people.

I foresee more schools being burned down if this goes in. Accountability?! There's no word for accountability in Pedi.

What method are schools in other African countries using, I doubt it's biometrics like they plan to now install.

Maybe just plain simple work ethics, ask most people up north, most of them will tell you Southern African's are a lazy bunch.

Worked in Namibia and Bots years back, they don't think much of South African locals.

Yeah seems like they're all inland :P

Rub it in.. will you ..

:p

I'm not making this shyte up. System security is part of my work. These people cost the business hundreds of thousands the last part of it was bribing the administrator on site to clock them in ( they log in and clock in on the system for the person) They just swear the guy was there and you have nothing against them.

I just don't think you can get lazy crooks to work for their money. I really don't

So there is no solution then, just let the system run itself into ruins?

In our industry, they help to improving transparency of recording attendance. We publish attendance records for everyone to see. We also publish business results, safety, quality. In that way, the team members can see how attendance impacts the bottom line. The data also helps during disciplinary hearings because it is deemed less subjective by unions.

How has that worked out? Good results?

I Don't know.. Fire the bunch you have now and hire the bunch you didn't want? Give teachers back the power to deal with hooliganism.

Sadly they have left it like this for too long. They should make schooling elective. those that want it can have it. Don't force people to go to school if they don't want to. School is not a nanny for parents that is not at home.
Then you will have the right amount of teachers that want to teach children/parents that wants to have educated kids. Education is a privileged not a right. IMO.

Motshekga said there was "great concern" in her department about teacher accountability -- arriving at school on time, and teaching for the full day. Her department was looking at introducing an electronic clock-in system to replace manual attendance registers.

Possibly due to the minister herself having no accountability apart from her responsibility of sucking up to Zuma. Pity there isn't a clock-in system for textbook delivery, maybe those books will get delivered then!

Thank god my kids' schooling aren't subject to these clowns.

Yip.

But if you are a teacher.. you should be able to afford a 2nd hand cheap car at least.

Really? My wife started teaching last year. At a decent school. And I can tell you, that between the study debt, renting a place and actually getting there.. I shudder to think how she would've made it if we weren't getting dual income.

Yes it works but the objective of monitoring attendance should be aligned with business objective of improving service. At the beginning, many workers will naturally see it as a disciplinary tool.

The system can help to establish data used as a foundation for problem-solving where attendance is critical. It is just one of the many steps needed to be taken to address quality of education.

How long did it take you to get the people to work with the system and not against it?
It's been a struggle with us for close to 3 years.

wheres picard? prolly 'sick' at home again...

I get to work at 7:15am and usually leave at about 16:00. In the past years cricket practice kept me at school till 17:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This year however I'm involved in athletics.

In my 7 years of teaching I have taken leave for medical reasons only about 6 times. And even then I arranged for a substitute teacher. 4 of those times I had to travel to Cape Town to see a specialist.

At my school things still work as they should.

Its taken almost five years because it requires a long change management process. I suspect it will be a longer struggle with government-unions relationship.
