Muller said that mobile operators launching LTE despite the lack of spectrum was the greatest triumph of the year.

I think the LTE launches were the biggest fails of 2012. None of the operators were ready to launch them - they just launched for bragging rights, and none of their offerings are of any use or relevance to the majority of their user base. I'm not sure how the general public perceived them, but anyone clued up about tech knows the LTE launches were BS and smoke and mirrors.

- Vodacom launches first (obviously waaaay to early), with comically bad coverage
- MTN launches with great coverage, but you can't actually use it because they allow a SINGLE tablet device on their "open LTE test"
- Somewhere in between CellC launched a closed trial tied to a dongle
