SAA pilot strike will continue indefinitely

I get why, what I doubt is the efficacy of their methods.
"Strike" is an oversimplification. From what I've heard, it's a lot more technical and the SA pilots association have some very good lawyers attending to their case.

"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

If a pilot is striking and the airline is not flying anyway, with no plans to fly at any point, does it make any difference?

The thing is the pilots as well as the other staff were offered severance packages last year which only the pilots rejected. It is my understanding that that was a 'take it or leave it' offer from SAA as part of the business rescue process whereas the pilots requested the severance package to be larger despite the airline not really being profitable currently. Whether or not they will receive another severance package offer remains to be seen.

The pilots greed may cost them dearly, they not going to get a lot if SAA gets liquidated.

problem is SAA is government, they know they can drag this out for years, and eventually get something sizable out.
probably why the lawyers flocking to this case, as the state has to eventually pay out.

Can they just let this ship finally sink!

Its over, we don't have a national airline, it was a good run and blah blah but the world has also changed. Sell everything, move on.

I see many people here fail to understand what it takes to be a commercial pilot. The dedication / the passion / the 100's of hours training / continued studying for all the new aircraft that they are required to fly / the never ending learning & upgrading / the never ending medical checks / never ending check rides to stay current, but besides that - they take on the responsibility of 100's of passengers lives everyday - are you prepared to do that for a pay packed filled with peanuts?

if you think chopping pilot salaries will attract the same quality pilot, the same dedication or replacing them with anc bee pilots - think again!

SA has some of the most skilled & qualified pilots in the world - they most certainly earn their salaries & privileges!

Sounds like stalemate. Next phase is who can hold out the longest. A new SAA needs pilots, can't hire new pilots if you in dispute with your current pilots. Pilots needs to earn a living, can't earn a living when you in a dispute.

I support the pilots for the simple reason because the DG ******* mentioned apartheid as a excuse.

this is why pilots get paid high salaries & privileges

when the **** hits the fan! who do you want at the controls?
1) a computer?
2) a low paid / low hour / over worked / disgruntled pilot?
3) a well paid / high hour / well rested / motivated pilot?
I know you are passionate about this topic but your arguments are not really valid.

1) no commercial aircraft that has any autopilot features has solely a computer backup in case of failure. That’s why the pilots are there.

2) pay does not determine pilot performance. See Ryan Air/EasyJet vs. British Airways/Lufthansa (unless you’re arguing that pilots who earn less than other pilots are prepared to crash the aircraft). Same goes for job happiness.

3) to have/keep an airline transport license all pilots must have at least 1500 flight hours to their name, various ratings (navigation, night, multi engine, etc) and be of a certain age. This is what the CAA, the FAA and airlines all over the world recognize as the minimum amount required to have enough know how under all circumstances to carry passengers safely. So by all definitions, pilots in command are qualified to keep you safe when something hits the fan ;)

So, the capitalists of MyBB are now suddenly in support of these striking pilots? How commie of them.
Unions and striking are integral parts of a genuinely free market. It's the people who hold most of the capital that hate unions, but they also hate the regulation vital to maintaining a free market.

These pilots are currently not earning anything and are owed millions from way back. If they strike indefinitely then the airline will never get off the ground again and they'll not see a cent of their owed salaries. Unless government is obliged to settle up if the airline goes belly up.
