SABC blackout threatened

Hehehe, this is why I don't have a TV or TV tuner card.

I borrowed a TV tuner card once from a friend. After 3 months of not using it I gave it back :D

Thankfully I am not on their licensing system, because once you are they start sending legal letters threatening you (even when your account is fully paid up) etc.

They leech of the few poor sods on their system.

I once had a TV license inspector dude knock on my door. First thing he asked is "Do you have a TV license" So I said NO. He looked a bit confused then I told him that he should have asked the correct question, which is "Do you have a TV?"

Idiots.

Why in SA do we have to ay TV Licenses. Its so silly, here in NZ there is no such thing!!

Recon this will be just as successful as the Vodacom blackout the called for ?

My problem is the R2bn they want. Hell imagine how much infrastructure 2bn can buy, or even better how many houses 2bn can build.

2 Billion for the SABC ? Who would have thought, is it even worth keeping the old rustbucket adrift at that price.

Donate it to the Arts dept of a university, let the students run it, that should see it turned into a gutsy piece of artwork with rejuvenated programs instead of gravytrain slowly puffing along with the most expensive staff ever.

2003--> tjoo-tjoo tjoo-tjoo tjoo-tjoo---> 2009 BANKRUPT

The report indicated that group chief executive, Peter Matlare, was earning more than R1.9m, while Solly Mokoetle, head of operations and finance head Robin Nicholson were earning in excess of R1.4m per annum.

These three managers also received joint bonuses of R606 000 during the last financial year.

Al die vet en vleis opgevreet nou's net die swaar ou bene oor

What boggles my mind is how the SABC managed to get bankrupt in the first place. How the hell did they do that when they have the most viewers and listeners of any of the broadcasters in the country AND they are government sponsored? They are also know in the TV industry for having the lowest budgets for content and ads. Its freaking ridiculous.

Maybe they should have less parties, business lunches, shopping trips in NY and big bonuses and cars for their executives.

"The groups also called for a financial bailout for the SABC, which recently said it needed at least R2 billion to pull itself out of its financial problems." ... Would LOVE to know how the F*** they managed to fall R2 billion short, especially when keeping in mind the kind of service they've been offering these last few years...there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that the lousy R19PM I'm supposed to pay will be going to corruption if I did (yes, I don't pay my license, and I never will, the f***ers can drag me to jail for all I care).

They went bankrupt mainly due the 14 foreign bureaus that they opened all over the world for the SABCNews channel that nobody watches. This was thanks to Snuki's delusions of grandeur: http://www.mg.co.za/article/2009-05-15-how-snuki-sank-the-sabc

If we stop paying now, and they go under, can someone still come after you for your arrears? Let's help them fail by not paying...

Sigh, The only thing my TV is used for is my Xbox, yet I still have to pay this cr@p...

SABC income sources in a nutshell,
  1. 3% Government
  2. 17% License Fees
  3. the rest from advertising - which is down R400m this year

Won't hurt me as I never go there... my TV licence fee is completely wasted!

There are many other countries where a tv license fee has to be paid to (or not to) watch public tv. New Zealand is one of the few exceptions along with a few other countries.

Countries should use advertising to fund the costs. Here in NZ we pay squat for local TV, our local TV channels are in high definition and feature shows that are limited to MNET/DSTV in SA. Where is all of the TV license money going? How can they be going into debt? It does not make sense that with the TV license funding, SA is still not even able to match the quality of local TV in other countries. WHy?

The SABC just likes using the excuse that it cannot afford to keep up because it does not make enough from TV licenses and that it cannot cannot police getting the money. The SABC is in so much debt because their focus and TV entertainment is on the wrong crowd (the guys that don't pay licenses). Most of the money spent goes onto channels (SABC1/2) that license payers are not even interested in.

Dude, stop with the New Zealand bull crap. It is pointless and rather idiotic to compare South Africa with NZ. KZN and Western Cape, combined, make a few thousand square kilometers over the size of NewZealand, Northern Cape alone is 65% larger than New Zealand. So anyone with half a working braincell would be able to grasp the idea that it is cheaper and quicker to deploy terrestrial telecom services in New Zealand than it is in South Africa. (FYI SA is the 25th largest coutry in the world, while New Zealand is 75th). What's next's? Compare Us to Maritius?

One would think that leaving SA would be enough, but no, even though your out of our borders, your still whining. Eish! its true lol, SA emigrants feel miserable ;)
