My problem is the R2bn they want. Hell imagine how much infrastructure 2bn can buy, or even better how many houses 2bn can build.
There are many other countries where a tv license fee has to be paid to (or not to) watch public tv. New Zealand is one of the few exceptions along with a few other countries. Why in SA do we have to ay TV Licenses. Its so silly, here in NZ there is no such thing!!
R2bn? Wtf! They can almost build a 2nd Gautrain with that doh!
What boggles my mind is how the SABC managed to get bankrupt in the first place. How the hell did they do that when they have the most viewers and listeners of any of the broadcasters in the country AND they are government sponsored? They are also know in the TV industry for having the lowest budgets for content and ads. Its freaking ridiculous.
Maybe they should have less parties, business lunches, shopping trips in NY and big bonuses and cars for their executives.
Kinda like saying I wish BMW would die, at least then I won't have to pay the forced yearly vehicle license.
They went bankrupt mainly due the 14 foreign bureaus that they opened all over the world for the SABCNews channel that nobody watches. This was thanks to Snuki's delusions of grandeur: http://www.mg.co.za/article/2009-05-15-how-snuki-sank-the-sabc

Sigh, The only thing my TV is used for is my Xbox, yet I still have to pay this cr@p...

Countries should use advertising to fund the costs. Here in NZ we pay squat for local TV, our local TV channels are in high definition and feature shows that are limited to MNET/DSTV in SA. Where is all of the TV license money going? How can they be going into debt? It does not make sense that with the TV license funding, SA is still not even able to match the quality of local TV in other countries. WHy?
The SABC just likes using the excuse that it cannot afford to keep up because it does not make enough from TV licenses and that it cannot cannot police getting the money. The SABC is in so much debt because their focus and TV entertainment is on the wrong crowd (the guys that don't pay licenses). Most of the money spent goes onto channels (SABC1/2) that license payers are not even interested in.
