SABC blackout threatened

Dude, stop with the New Zealand bull crap. It is pointless and rather idiotic to compare South Africa with NZ. KZN and Western Cape, combined, make a few thousand square kilometers over the size of NewZealand, Northern Cape alone is 65% larger than New Zealand. So anyone with half a working braincell would be able to grasp the idea that it is cheaper and quicker to deploy terrestrial telecom services in New Zealand than it is in South Africa. (FYI SA is the 25th largest coutry in the world, while New Zealand is 75th). What's next's? Compare Us to Maritius?

One would think that leaving SA would be enough, but no, even though your out of our borders, your still whining. Eish! its true lol, SA emigrants feel miserable ;)

Dude I am just making a point. Take a chill pill for petes sake, or get back into bed, its way past your bedime? Nothing to watch on TV I guess? You must be a real loner to be up at 4:00am in the morning

Its got nothing to do with the size of the country. My point is SA is targeting the wrong audience, it does not make sense to target an audience that does not pay TV licences. Lets admit the facts here, 95% of the stuff on TV1/2/3 is not watched by people like you and I, This very thread makes that very clear.

Your point about the size of the country and its terrestrial infrastructure is faulted. That infrastructure you talking about has been payed for many many years ago, its ancient technology. Compare SA then with AUS, where they too have no TV licences and the basic TV in that country also far exceeds the SABC pathetic programme guide. Given the fact that the SABC gets so much money from TV licences it should be more than enough to cover the upkeep of the current infrastructure. The problem is at the SABC management level, the lot of them need to be fired. SABC only has itself to blame.

If the SABC was targeting the correct audience they could easily quadruple their advertising costs. :D:D:D

Recon this will be just as successful as the Vodacom blackout the called for ?

I was going to ask the same thing...

This blackout is even stupider than the vodacom blackout... LOL!!!

BLA BLA BLA BLA

Why sit on a SOUTH AFRICAN forum and compare SA to NZ?? There is no point, and just so you know Britain also pays TV licenses. Just stop please, you're hurting my eyes.

SABC income sources in a nutshell,
  1. 3% Government
  2. 17% License Fees
  3. the rest from advertising - which is down R400m this year

Cool, thanks! :) Didn't know government gave only 3%. I thought it was more like 12%/

Do you have a link to some figures maybe? And maybe expenditures as well? I have to deal with the SABC every once in a while and I would appreciate more background info.

Sell the TV, get a LCD with VGA, DVI & HDMI and stop paying.

I currently have a 37" LCD TV to switch over to a purely LCD Screen of the same size will cost bundles more than the TV did?

Why bother paying your tv licence at all? It's almost impossible to enforce if you live in a high concentration development like a block of flats, and if you've never been on their system in the first place, they don't even know who you are.

Do the right thing, DON'T pay your tv licence.

Here's is some info,
Currently, 85% of the SABC funding comes from advertising, 10 to 12% is generated from television licences and the rest (3%) comes from the national government.

Here's is some info,
Cool thanks. Still vague though(no figures). And from 2006.

On a side note from what I read in that article it seem the new strategic direction they took didn't go as planned.

Does anybody know where I can get actual income and expenses figures or if they are publicly available?

The TV licence applies to "any device" capable of receiving a terrestrial signal... including a TV adapter card for a computer or a cellphone. Sorry, you still need to buy a licence for that. Fortunately you only need one for your household.

You can read all the regulations in the FAQ on the TV licence website.

Your average TV license inspector doesn't have the intelligence to inspect your PC. No TV, no license. Not that I've ever bothered to pay.

Just out of interest: how do these guys prove you have a TV? They have no right to set foot in your premises, this is a job for the SAPS with a valid warrant.

Of course we have a much larger population paying taxes (theoretically) and TV licenses so its just a matter of numbers. Or are you merely stating that South Africa is incapable of governing and managing a country of this size? Maybe all the provinces should become independent nations?

And your point would be what?

Of which something like 70% of advertising revenue is from SABC3.

This imbalance and inability to manage advertising revenue (Etv does it) is the biggest problem at the SABC.

most of it probably from the 7pm news.
there was talk of commercialising SABC 3, whatever happened to that.

SA cannot afford SAA and SABC (more ANCBC) anymore. Time to close down these institutions. The masses can watch e-tv.

As you can see from the presented figures, it is possible to run a tv/radio service with just advertising revenue if the SABC can re-organise into a private entity. But the government does not want to allow a private only tv service (that reaches millions of people ) at the mercy of advertisers for obvious reasons.

Advertising alone generates around R4b if we go with the numbers the SABC gives for their total expenses. Run properly, the SABC would be very profitable and could actually rival MC for content with a command of 53% of total ad revenue in the country.
