SABC TV License

I've always wondered, would you be able to get round TV license issues, by pulling the antenna socket out the back of the TV, but retaining the actually hardwired tuner hadware?

The 75 ohm socket is only held in place, by solder, and a thin piece of wire connecting it to the main internal assembly.

Don't think so. There's a prescribed denaturing process...

I also have a problem with thee SABC. Every year they have been trying to nail me for a TV that I rented from Teljoy many many moons ago. I think the bill is somehwere around R9K by now. I have not had said TV for more than 10 years. For our current set, we have an up to date license in my wifes name. The TV that they are chargeing me for, was stolen, and Teljoy contract cancelled.

They just will not leave me alone.

Get teljoy to send you confirmation that the contract was cancelled and TV stolen, and send that to the SABC?

They dont have my records anymore. I just tel SABC to send me name of the person who will represent them in court, I will meet them there. Dont hear from them again for another year.

Surprised nobody has tried to seek revenge on the SABC, by faxing them thousands of pro DA propaganda, and the odd hundred or so pure black pages.

At least they'll need to be too preoccupied replacing the toner, then being able to send out threatening letters.

Last I checked on my father's TV license, this was 2 years ago, he's something like R14k in arrears, since we've been living abroad for the past 12 years, and yet we've heard nothing from the SABC, as they don't know how to contact us.

The new occupants of our old house in Cape Town, must be getting threats to summon them to court left right, and center.

According to the SABC website, a TV can be "denatured" which means have the TV's tuner disabled. Once this is done, you are then exempt from paying for the licence. However, when I applied for cancellation, I was sent a document View attachment TVLVIEW.doc that only mentions not having a TV set at all, not a denatured one.

:D

You have to send a signed affidavit every year. For the first year, you pay for denaturing, then you pay R300 for an inspector to come and check

It sucks that you have to do that but the SABC doesn't give you too many choices. I hate paying them every year but I cannot find a way to get rid of the bastards.

Apparently they still send you bills when you are dead
