After we gave them 1% of our taxes, or without it?

SABC will make profit from 2012

The cash-strapped SA Broadcasting Corporation will start turning a profit by 2012, MPs heard on Tuesday.

... and as usual, details of how this amazing turnaround will happen are very sketchy..
"500,000 jobs will be created by the end of the year" :erm::rolleyes:
"Free education for all .." :erm::rolleyes:
"Quality healthcare ... " :erm::rolleyes:
"Cheap reliable broadband ... " :erm::rolleyes:

why not just scrap the SABC, sell off the assets and give everyone a tax break for the next year?

It's not like there is anything on there to watch anyway.

Over and above the R200 million it was granted by Treasury last week, announced by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan in his mid-year Budget, the SABC had also applied for a five-year government guarantee to the tune of about R1.4 billion.

Why is it always the taxpayer that must fund their incompetence?

A "big problem" was costs, which had risen steeply, and remained higher than the corporation's income.

Most other business organisations of their magnitude faced the same rise in costs, yet they made provision for it without looking to someone to bail them out

Charnley said the SABC was now "stable", and the interim board was preparing to hand over to the recently-announced permanent board in the middle of this month.

Good. Let's hope they are a little more streetwise and a little less focused on their own back pockets, political gain, etc.

But whatever happened to the incompetent bunch who got the SABC into this mess? Hopefully not free and off the hook?

Why not just close the SABC and allow the taxpayer to make a profit for a change.

Yes, it is amusing how costs are a stumbling block to the SABC, while every other company out there also happen to have these costs.

Heck, even I have costs but I don't go crying to the government for a bailout :D

It is called a budget.

The SABC must cut back and run only one TV station - SABC 1 - on it they can have:

-Local content
-Educational content
-News
-Typical govt propaganda about how well they are doing etc.
-Sports

Remember that having free television broadcast to your set cannot be a right. The idea of 'rights' has been so diluted these days e.g. right to internet, right to entertainment etc. that it diminishes the strength of our real rights.

The other channels must be privatised and allowed to go free to air - like E-TV. Let it pay for itself.

SABC is a lot more than just the 3 channels of Television.
Do you know that the leading radio stations in terms of listnership are those owned by SABC?
Do you even realise that there are areas in this country of ours where there is no TV signal reception at all?
More specifically radio in some parts of this country remains the only medium through which news and information maybe distributed

Profit? the only profit they make will be in the Mercedes Benz dealer's books. They got into this situation by their own mismanagement.

Jungleboy - everyone realises this. So why not scrap all govt channels and have 1 govt tv channel and 1 govt radio channel broadcasting news and information in the various languages.

Everything else can be private. Entertainment is not a right.

Govt should not be in the business of entertainment or even in deciding what is the standard for entertainment. Especially not with our tax rands.

Its is a universal truth that all Govt departments (worldwide) creep to bureaucracy , so lets keep their affairs to an absolute minimum. Provide the basics - that is all.

I just love paying for the their fckups. SAA,Eskom, SABC ...

After the 1% tax the SABC can throw parties everyday, bribe and mismanagement some MORE money, without to worry that the money will dry up!

Watch the exec to the cleaners driving beemers, mercedes etc. And they will get like bonuses, 15% yearly increase even if there is recession.

At the risk of pissing Pooky and Allen off for posting, I guess that as long as this mentality of entitlement exists, there is no way in hell that they will EVER show a profit...

They're requesting R1.4bn from the government over 4 years and they have the audacity to claim they will be making a profit in 3 years time? Standing on your own two feet and making a profit - that is a success. Government bailouts, TV licenses, etc, etc are not going to make a successful business model.
