Safely selling your used items

my profile on gumtrees and facebook are pretty old so the probability I am going to scam someone when selling something is rather small

I've sold quite a few items on both platforms, but I only do EFT these days

Also as a seller ,it helps to issue pro forma invoices with your (verified) details on the invoice, I also encourage buyers to do video calls so they can see I have the item, and all binding communication is done in writing.

Fair point - I have never used it personally. However, hearing the same thing from multiple sources does lend some confirmation to my bias.

Gumtree has been good to me in the past, I sold a car there in a matter of hours and bought another one. Sold some TVs and lovingly built i7-4770K - all for the asking price. I got scammed once and it was my own fault. Dodgy guy drove out all the way to Stellenbosch and had his father to an "immediate EFT" from Investec to ABSA. Conveniently at the time ABSA was down (as per usual) but I got a SMS and thought that was enough. Mistake. Never got the money. I am not sure if they cancelled the EFT or if it was fake from the get-go but I lost R2000 on an AMD A10-9630.

Gumtree support was very helpful in banning the accounts and phone numbers, they also urged me to make a police case.

From my perspective, you are making his point about egotistical fanatics... but I'll give the benefit of the doubt and assume you were trolling @Rouxenator
 
On another note. Is one as the buyer obligated to pay for extra shipping costs on Bobshop especially after completing the checkout? I had an instance where I bought an item, and paid the R30 shipping through checkout. The seller then messaged me to pay for the additional shipping costs as the couriers charged them for overweight items. But through the checkout there wasn't any instance of additional shipping costs, only the R30. I was under the assumption, that any excess would be covered by Bobshop. Based on invoices, I paid for everything already and there is no fine print. Still got my item though.

The seller has to pay the additional fees, it's a big no no to ask the buyer to pay for them and they could get their account banned.

I see, I understand. Thanks. So as a buyer, they are only obligated to pay what appears on the checkout. There's no please pay a difference to the additional shipping fees or even overweight charges?

I see. The item ended weighing around 10kg, when it arrived. This was the original message I got, when I bought it, so a big no no.

"Kindly note the the volumetric of this parcel will be +/- 40kgs. I've indicated the parcel dimensions when I was listing and I'm just wondering why did they charge you R30 for shipping when the difference will be deducted from my account. Please don't get it twisted this is not your fault. However i will be very grateful if you were to pay the difference before I book courier.

Alternatively I can ship it then send you the invoice of whatever they charge me and you'll have to reimburse me. Unfortunately lately I've had a number of orders whereby the outstanding amounts were debited from my account. In one instance if I remember well someone paid me about R33 for their order and more than R700 was debited from my account. Kindly advise as to the way forward. Please note that the additional money will not be credited to my account it's strictly for shipping purposes. Thank you so much for your understanding."

The seller is trying to pass the buck for their stuff up, or it’s just a straight up scam, how much extra were they demanding for the shipping?

They need to just suck it up and pay the cost.

If they had the parcel dimensions correct and the weight then the correct shipping cost would have been applied. It is their stuff up - they must pay.

I only made that mistake 3 times :laugh:

When they sent that message it was Oct last year. They sent me a message again in Dec, asking for R200. Eish.

Nope - does not work like that. I forgot to add the dimensions on a rather big item that sold for a low price on auction - ended up making a R200 loss on it due to the shipping. My mistake so I had to take that hit.

Repeated that mistake again with a deep cycle lead acid battery they weighed 30KG....

After that I made sure to include the correct dimension and weight on my listings.

It would be credited to their account, if they have charges above what they should be paying they need to contact bobshop to have it resolved.

I see, so it is the responsibility of the seller to ensure their listing is correct, and if there are any issues they should resolve it with Bobshop. It is not the responsibility of the buyer like me to pay for any excess or cover any of their losses.

Correct - if the seller correctly fills in the package details, then BoB can automatically determine the shipping cost and display it accordingly on the listing - so the buyer is fully aware of it.

If the seller just leaves it all to defaults then it will fall to the lowest rate, R30, and if they then book it as a larger item when doing the courier booking it is completely for their account.
