Same. I used Marketplace a lot, but the vibe definitely changed a while ago, especially when selling tech. I had good experiences selling power tools and camping gear, but these days I prefer the neighborhood buy / sell group for most things.

I'd rather have sellers that paid to get a green tick (police clearance) and a good positive rating - like me.

What does everyone else do to ensure safety and successful transaction without any repurcussions or unwanted visits afterwards?

I don't get why so few people are using escrow services. I've used Paysho a few times - rates are cheap, and at least you'll know that you've received the item, or that the buyer has transferred the funds. I've even had people refuse to use an escrow (I gave them the option of which escrow to use, with cost on me), because they didn't know what it was (or was trying to scam, more likely).
 
I have bought and sold a few things on Fb marketplace but scanned profiles and only from people close to me and when their address is in a good part of city. Many news articles of people getting robbed and killed the last year on FB marketplace, so I try to rather avoid it.
Local Whatsapp groups are ok, but many cheapskates and they normally just buy big bargains.
Carbonite works great if you only deal with high itrader members, but its mostly tech, other stuff don't really sell.

I am more worried why OP does not want people at his house or more why buyers threaten him? Did you sell them broken stuff?

Safest, fastest and easiest is Cash converters, but you not going to get full price.

The problem with Escrow services is as you say, they're not well known. If you don't know about something, or have heard about it for the first time, you're going to be cagey.
A market place like bobshop adds value by providing a rating system and some guarantees.

Truly a dinosaur from an ancient past, even gumtree is heading that way, FB now rules the “people selling sht” market and it’s good, apart from the “Is it still available“… if you know you know..
 
The few things I have bought on FB marketplace always showed up (via Postnet or Pudo) but it is not nearly as integrated as the new Bobshop platrform.

I get that, which is why I won't insist on a specific escrow. But Standard Bank offers an escrow service, and they're a pretty reputable brand. Rating systems help, but only if you sell regularly on a specific platform. Escrow services mitigate the risk for lesser known sellers as well.
