Hi everyone,

I hope you are doing well during this festive season.

I was wondering, what approach do you take when selling your used phone's, laptops etc.

What I mean is, where do you advertise it and how do you ensure the transaction is safe. So ensuring the seller gets their money and the buyer gets the item. The last think you would want is the seller running off with the item and not giving it to the buyer after receiving payment, and also you don't want the seller running off with the item and the month and not paying the seller.

This appears to be like a catch 22.
I am not a fan of having people coming to my house and looking at items I want to sell. Sometimes people abuse the fact that they know where you live later on.
I do not know how to approach this...

What does everyone else do to ensure safety and successful transaction without any repurcussions or unwanted visits afterwards?

Thank you!

First prize is you local community whatapps group.

I use FB market place but then I scan the persons profile to within an inch of their lives.

Cash only, none of that intant eft bs that doesnt clear in an hour etc.

If its a small item you can meet in a public place.

Unfortunately if its a large item your home is usually the only place. But always exercise caution.

Agree with whatsapp local groups.... but also a lot of time wasters on there
facebook works well too
Sold a ps4 once and they guy had a really sketchy profile, maybe a couple years old, no pics, very little friends
Called me and asked if he could come collect at 7pm before he starts his night shift....Everything screamed scammer, but decided to give him the benefit of the doubt, he was legit, youngish guy when I asked about his fb he said he doesnt spend much time on social media lol

Yeah its a tough one especially in a case like that.

What I also try do is reciprocate the experience I want.

Contact the person only if serious bring cash deal swiftly and properly.

You can also sell here and carbonite then atleast people have somewhat of a history

That sounds like a good idea as well. I will definitely try here and Carbonite. Thank you.

1. Buyer pays first and you validate it.
2. Use a courier.

The only exception to this is when selling a vehicle, but in that case them knowing where you live doesn't really matter as it's already tracked on the paperwork and they get all your information regardless.

bobshop .

bobshop

I used them since they started in 2000, closed my account when they started charging a fee in 2003, then registered again 2005 and been selling since.

My suggestion is list stuff at the price you want for it, but it does not sell in a week or two then go for a Crazy Wednesday auction. While I have sold stuff at R1 that way, most of the time items fetch a reasonable price.

I just hate drop shippers like that World Online seller, after placing my order weeks later I get my item then the naaier wants more money for import duties. I lost the plot with them, they said it is in their fine print. But ja, I can smell a drop shipper a mile away now, I stay away from those Sellers.

That is the safest, but no doubt a lot of people get scammed like that
