Sahara Computers has launched an 8-inch netbook, aiming to address the growing demand for product within what analysts describe as a high-volume, burgeoning market segment.

The Linux-based solution runs on AMD LX 800 (500MHz) processor and features 512MB RAM, 60GB hard disk drive, an 8-inch LCD widescreen and a built-in 1,3 mega pixel web-cam. It is specifically targeted at the netbook market defined by low cost, compact and lean function product.



But I'm sure there will be a Windows version too, same thing with most netbooks, both platforms are offered.

To all the netbook fans out there, isn't this inferior to the existing set available from the multitute of ones available at the same price? Or based on the spec is this fairly reasonable?

The Sahara Netbook has been available for about 2-3 months now.

Too bad it is Sahara, they made me unhappy in the past.

Too expensive for a 500Mhz netbook. Standard cellphones are already testing the 500Mhz barrier and they cost less than R3K.

There is a difference between an Intel Mhz, an AMD Mhz and an ARM Mhz. Come to think of it, ARM is an entirely different architecture and it is much more elegant than x86 based ones.

AMD is also much more energy efficient than Intel and in many cases they do more per clock cycle than Intel (not counting Core2).

Rather give me an Asus EEE PC, Dell Mini, Acer One, or any of the other countless netbooks which look far better. Rouxenator may have a point, but the Intel Atom is a better CPU.
