Salary increase

I don't think you can. I seem to remember seeing it mentioned in the Basic Conditions of Employment that you may discuss it with other staff members.

Because in some companies people dont get the same salary increase. If word gets out, the management will have a riot on their hands.

Its also put in your employement contract that you may not discuss your salary with anyone other than HR.

In my previous co it was a dismissable offence... I tested it :D hence the word *previous*

exactly this ...i mean me and colleagues are doing the same job but they are here longer

so they earn much more but if someone new has to come in and i find out he is earning more ...i will cause a riot :p

do so at your own peril....first thing they will ask is *where did you get the info* and you could be dragged into a DC for breach of contract

Protection of employees against discrimination
Rights of employees
78. (1) Every employee has the right to—
(b) discuss his or her conditions of employment with his or her fellow employees,
his or her employer or any other person;

Technically I'm sure you could get way with discussing your salary under that one.

Not advisable though :D

"Increases" where I work were about 5 to 6% on average which is below inflation if you take personal income tax into account.
In order to keep up with inflation you need to get an increase equal to inflation plus the income tax you would pay on the increase.
i.e. If you're getting less than about 9% per annum you're actually getting poorer every year.

At the risk of completely derailing this thread, but doesn't an explicit inclusion of a specific clause, and the acceptance thereof overrule that? I don't know, so I'm asking.

I am sure they can stop you discussing other peoples increases, but surely not your own..or your own salary amongst colleagues?

This year i have zero optimism with my increase. Last was was 0.98% for me (although a month later i received a special award for outstanding performance).....

I would be massively surprised if i got anything more than 4 % this year. The only reason i am staying at the moment is that they are paying for my CCIE...otherwise i would be outta here

Its actually quite amusing to see how many people are no longer satisfied with their employers...

The loyalty etc aspect has completely gone out of the window in recent years.

i earn krap and well im going to be loyal for a while unless i dont get a good increase

things are getting expensive and if you want to get married and want to have a family ...a 5% wont cut it

To paraphrase Dwight Schrute:

"I go where they value loyalty the most"

Loyaly is a two-way street. No reason why you should be a doormat for your employer. An employment contract should be mutually beneficial. You don't get that nowadays.

Couldn't agree more with that statement.

Only if you agree to it I guess since the Act also states

(d) refuse to agree to any term or conditions of employment that is contrary to this act or any sectoral determination;

The loyalty etc aspect has completely gone out of the window in recent years.

With the cost of living these days most employees are forced to constantly look out for something better. Loyalty doesn't pay the bills unfortunately :(

After reading Dolbys thread I thought I'll start one of my own.

What was your annual increase like this year? What is the current inflation rate?

I joined my current company in November 2010 and just received a 7% increase.

My increase this year was 8%. Kicked in end of March. Average throughout the company was 4%. I must add I'm now working about 20% more hours per week as last year, hence the extra 4%.

We got 8% (effective Oct 2011). Yes, I'm a hypocrite – I don’t like the unions, but if NUM wants to fight, fight, fight and fight for a big increase, who am I to stop them?

2011 - 10% increase plus 2 bonuses
2012 - 20% increase

EDIT: as I read this thread I consider myself lucky. But then again we sometimes pull 100 hours in a week.

Big increase? If you take fuel, electricity and water into account then I doubt that even matches inflation

If its stated in your contract & you sign & you discuss & get caught, you are gone.

Usually your employment contract will state something along the lines of *you may not disclose your remuneration to anyone either thanyour immediate supervisor or HR*
