Samsung 32" LCD vs. Sansui 32" LED

Here’s the deal, I went to Hi-Fi Corporation today to buy the Samsung LA32D550 32” LCD HDTV to use as a monitor. This thread seems to confirm that this Samsung TV works great as a monitor.

However, when I got to Hi-Fi Corporation the Sansui STY1232 32” LED HDTV was available for the same price (R3500). The sales guy kept going on about how LED is better than LCD and how I can bring the TV back within 14 days if I’m not satisfied. So I thought: “What the hell, let’s give this TV a shot. The shop is 2 blocks from my flat so it’s not trouble to return it.”

Now here’s where I need some help from the MyBB community; how can I (rather objectively) test this TV to see if it is better than the Samsung or not? Unfortunately I don’t have both, so comparing is not going to be too easy. I was thinking more along the lines of simple tests I can run and then compare my results with people who own the LA32D550.

I’m going to compare the full specifications list tomorrow (when I’m more awake), but specs only tell half the story.

Any help will be greatly appreciated [note to self: you sound like a street corner beggar :) ]. I’ve got 13 days to make up my mind.
 
i can tell you that the 32inch Samsung HDTV LED is great as a monitor from watching movies,browsing the web and playing games in HD. i've had LCD before but the LED kicks its ass!
 
My advice, get the Samsung. Even though its not LED, the panel used would be superior to the Sansui. Also bear in mind LED is not perfect and because a tv is LED does not automatically make it better than the CCFL. The Samsung I would imagine also has more features like USB port though I am not sure about the Sansui.
 
The panel is more important than LCD vs LED, after all an LED TV is a LCD TV with a LED back light. Google it if you don't believe me. So you pay extra for a thinner profile and NO improvement in Picture Quality and maybe reduced power consumption.
 
Sigh, people still falling for marketing gimmick?

Have you even hooked it up to your PC yet? The Sansui will have limiting menus. I'm wondering whether it even had PC Mode, 1:1 pixel mapping, disabling of overscan, etc.

Taking the Hifi Corp idiot's advice over ours is quite a slap in the face. Keep the Sansui as punishment.

@CR34M3 A year ago, even 6mths ago you could you have considered the option of taking the Sansui over the Samsung as the price differences then would have justified it, now Samsung have dropped so much in price that considering other brands is not really an option. Heck, I love HiSense and ubber happy with mine but no way I'm going to be buying anything but Samsung at the moment for my next TV

I'm really sorry if I offended anyone, I just thought I'd give it a try and see if it's any good. At any rate, this is a learning curve for me as this is the first LCD/LED (monitor or tv) that I've bought. I'm still a bit new to this. :o
That's also why I kept the backdoor open -- 2 mins drive and I can exchange it.

I haven't connected it yet -- I'm away from my PC till tonight. I'll check for those modes you mentioned PostmanPot.

You live, you skrew up, you learn. :D
 
From past experience Samsung picture and color quality completely blows Sansui out of the water. A couple of months ago I was also looking for a tv and when comparing Samsung with most manufacturers, Samsung won hands down. Return the Sansui imo.
 
Sansui is not the brand that we knew from long ago. From what I know, Hi-Fi corp has the name and brings in their own goods under the Sansui brand.
I would go for Samsung/Sony/LG. That's my opinion.

Played around with the Sansui a bit -- I'm gonna return it for the Samsung tomorrow. As PostmanPot speculated, the menus and customisation options are a bit limited. Also, the person who designed the remote should be dragged into the street and shot.
On the positive side, the design is nice and simplistic with a slim profile and a rather thin edge. Anime looks awesome on this tv (but I'm sure the Samsung can match it easily).

Reading through the specs of the Samsung again, I can't help but think: "Why did you even give this thing a try!?" :confused:
 
Dude, take that horrible thing back! All you are getting with LED TV's is an alternative lighting source, which (unless it is fully backlit, which yours is not) will actually not light the screen as evenly as traditional CCFL, and can make colours seem a bit "off".

Pros will be that it will be thinner and use less power though. Otherwise, it will have an inferior panel, menu, customization options and software/engine.

Funny that, I tend to watch my TV from the front (perpendicular) and not side-on, ..also I watch the screen and not the bezel, ..but each to their own. ;) :)
