Guys,

I have decided to take the plunge into the HD world and upgrade my Main CRT TV to HD.

That said, I need your advise in deciding between sets. I know all about the brand wars etc. I just need some good advice please.

I have decided to go for 46" LCD/LED.

My budget is around R6500.

I saw these two sets at Makro both for R5999:

Samsung Series 5 LA46D550 46" FHD LCD TV
50Hz
USB 2,0
HDMI x 4
All share (wireless DLNA)
12 month guarantee

AND

Sinotec STL-46KC51F: 46'' FULL HD LED LCD TV
Aspect ratio 16:9
Brightness 450nit
Contrast 3000:1
Response time 5.5ms
Panel Frequency 100Hz
2xhdmi
1xusb
5 year guarantee

For what it's worth, I couldnt see much difference between the sets with the Makro setup.

Is 50Hz really a problem on bigger sets?

Samsung is LCD where Sinotec is LED.
Samsung is 50Hz where Sintotec is 100Hz
Samsung 1 Year and Sinotec 5 years.

Let me also say, I am a Sony fan, but cannot afford it (unless I go for 40").

Also, would I be able to view avi directly from the USB port on either set?

Regards

I cannot vouch for the Sinotec, but the Samsung you can definitely play a lot of media on it and occassionally there are firmware updates that seem to fix any issues. I had a Sinotec 42" a year ago and the Samsung is better.

I've had my Samsung 40" LCD for about 2 years now and from personal experience I love it. The design is great and never once had an issue with it, still going strong. I would recommend however maybe consider going for a 40" LED Samsung tv, definitely a better investment than the Sinotec tv. Don't know about you, but I wouldn't miss 6 inches (that's not what she said LOL)

To be honest the only reason to go LED is for the faster refresh rate, not anything else at the moment and the price is a little high still. The LCD is great and 6" do actually count when it comes to distances ;-)

Thanks guys,

I guess for a normal viewer like me the 50Hz should be fine? All that is making me lean towards sinotec is the warranty and 100Hz/LED combination at this stage. Then again, it remains a sinotec.

Yeah I'm not convinced about the Sinotec brand, it's like buying that ByDesign they sell at Hi-Fi corp, not sure about the quality. But shop around, I managed to get my Samsung with a 3 year warranty from House and Home. 50HZ should be more than enough for tv, sports and even blu ray movies. Gaming should also be great at that refresh rate on current consoles.

if you want to view videos via the built in media player, you should be certain to test in store first as some tvs only play music and view photos. Not all have the ability to play videos. Even some of the newer Samsung tvs have had this feature removed.

Great, just logged into the House&Homes site, they have the LG for R5989! They also sell JVC which I only remember from the early crt days.

Those aren't the same JVC's from the early days, they are basically rebranded Chinese TV's much like the Sinotec .

Got it. Same as Telefunken, no longer the German company of old. I'm leaning towards the Samsung 46, even at 50Hz I read some good reviews.

Good man. ALWAYS do your research before purchasing electronics or just about anything really. That's why the internetz was invented.

Quite easy to identify, the model numbers ending in 03 are the crippled ones e.g. UA40D5003

I've got both a 51" FHD 3D Samsung, a 42" FHD Sinotec and a 32" HDR Sinotec, the quality on the Samsung is obviously better, but theres absolutely nothing wrong with the Sinotec. Once you have the tv at home, there is no other better models to compare it to so it will be fine.

Very true. If you say obviously better, do you mean there is a real noticeable diferrence which you can REALLY see?

That's because the 51" is a plasma...

Depends what you're watching?

I have a Samsung 46" LCD at home, and a Sinotec 32"... yes the Samsung is better, but there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the Sinotec, and that 5 yr guarantee is actually worth its weight in gold now.

My old Sinotec 42" tv died after about 4 yrs... got Makro to come out, they couldn't repair so gave a credit for the full original purchase price....
