Samsung 46" vs Sinotec 46"

I meant twice the price of the 42" FHD Sinotec that TriggerTRD has to compare it to.

Actually considering getting the PS51D450. R6400 at nivo.

I see. :) Well if you don't sit close and don't need FHD and/or you can get over the whole FHD thing :D, then it's an excellent bargain. If you value picture quality, SD quality, and sport.

The LA46D550 FHD, seen for R5,999 recently, is also damn good.

Main priority is size, with cost being the next big one. PQ on anything current is adequate.
I'm very over the FHD thing. I don't know of anyone that could even tell the difference without it being hooked up to a pc.

Haha

Yes the 51" I have is Plasma and I love it. Postman Pats advice was tops. When you place the Plasma next to an LED/LCD, you can literally see the difference. Games like Batman:Arkham City and stuff look awesome, even WWE 2012.

I paid R8899 for the Plasma and recently R2599 for the 32" and I think the 42" Sinotec was R8999 all those years ago (good price back then).

However I agree, nobody will know the difference between FHD and HDR, nor the difference between a Samsung/Sony/Sinotec/Hisense, etc once its at home.

A point to note, last week at Game they had a Telefunken FHD LED 32" for R2599 and athe Sinotec 32" HDR for R2599. I went there to buy the Telefunken actually, but it was not bright, whereas the Sinotec seemed better, even after adjusting the settings on both.

Dont get fooled by an FHD or LED TV being better just for its namesake. Look at contrast ratios and frequency and what not.

Very true. If you say obviously better, do you mean there is a real noticeable diferrence which you can REALLY see?

Yes there is. But obviously if you take into account the price difference now, the quality should be better!

I have the 51" in my lounge and 42" in my private lounge, if I watch a movie on either, I wont really be able to tell the difference as both have great quality, but only when they are placed next to each other can you see the brilliance of the Samsung and the Plasma of course.

The warranty is a big thing - you dont want to pay R5000+ for a tv and then 2 years down the line it breaks and you have to fork out for a new one.

Plasma will almost always have better contrast ratio due to deep and consistent blacks. It's a pity the manufacturers had to revert to forcing the bs dynamic contrast ratio in order to give their inferior LCD tech some high numbers in order to sell.

Read a review now with the PS51D550 rated "highly recommended". It's tempting me now. I don't actually have anywhere else to put it so wondering if I should sell the sony 40" lcd and pay in a bit more to get the 550 instead of the 450. PostmanPot do you know if it has a better AR coating? 720->1080 doesn't make much diff to me, 3D basically makes no diff besides dropping the "oh my tv is 3D too" if anyone asks. I'm hijacking this thread now though.

At 51" rather get Full HD if your budget allows it, you will notice the difference, especially if you are using a PC.

Unfortunately the PS51D550 lacks the AR coating that the PS50C550 had. Pretty sure it's the same finish as on the PS-450's.

If you have the cash I'd do it! FHD does have some merits, at least you'll be future-proof.

Damn, that was one thing I was hoping would be better than on my PS42C450. Yeah, most of it is just ticking more boxes making it more future proof etc. The PS42C450 was great, nicer screen than my sony 40CX520. The 42 is now in the lounge and it's in a spot that's recessed into the chimney so it's basically the exact right size for where it is. The only suitable upgrade for that would be a 43" D model. The sony 40" is in the bedroom though and either the window behind the bed or the bedside light were usually visible when the 42" was in there.

I hear you, I also have the PS42C450 and so share your sentiments, brilliant TV and when I tell my friends it's FHD they believe me. My one friend, owns a 46" CX520, was astounded at the PQ in comparison of my HD Supersport channels. IIRC, the PS42C450 actually had a slight AR coating? I might have been mistaken, admittedly I wasn't as clued up back then.

Soi my understanding is you want a new bedroom TV, and the bedroom is light and therefore not suitable for plasma? Guess so. :(

It's not *that* light. The window has a blind but you can still see some light around the edges and through the slats. You can only really see it on the 42C450 if you look for it (as in shift your focus basically). I think it does have some AR coating but the 490/550 seemed to have better AR coatings. The light can be seen on the sony lcd sometimes as well so we've actually pretty much gotten used to watching stuff with it off. The blinds there are basically closed all the time anyway for privacy. I actually want to put some tint on those windows at some point. It's 2 windows about 45cm*45cm above each bedside table. I'd rather work around the issue and have a huge ass plasma :p

Agree about this range of Sammy plasmas. I have the 50" C430 and the PQ rivals the newer and more expensive E series.

This looks good: Sony 40" FHD LED TV (KDL-40EX520) - Game 10-13 May 2012 R5799, except not 46".
