So I have this external hard drive from Dubai that doesn't work when connected to my Pc, Pc doesn't pick it up at all, I have tried connecting it to a USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 port and nothing.

The light comes on and stays on but the drive isn't picked up by my Pc at all.

Any way to confirm that it's faulty, dead?

Details are as follows:

SAMSUNG M3 Portable 1TB
Model: HX-M101TCB/G

What is it doing...spinning up? If you put your ear to it, is it spinning and does it stay spinning?

The drive inside has a USB only PCB, no SATA connector.

If it's from Dubai and there's no warranty, then open it up and check for any obvious loose connections around the USB port.

If it was bought in duty free then you should find somebody flying on Emirates airlines and return it or get a replacement.

Might be that USB isnt delivering enough power to the HD.

When I connect it is does a few short revs (about 5), (like a motor bike) then it doesn't do anything, it stops spinning after that.

It says on the box that it has a limited 3 year warranty.

Did you try it with different PC/Laptop?

Internal, mechanical problem. If you can't make use of the warranty then throw it away I'm afraid.

Try it with the usb slots at the back.

Also are you using the original cable?

If not try another cable. I know the PS3 controller cables to do work.

The cheaper variants do not.

I've tried a standard USB 2.0 port, a powered USB 2.0 port and a USB 3.0 port.

Yes, same problem.

Ok thank you.

Is it powered by a plug and USB or just a cable, if the latter then it needs two USB plugs from the hardrive.

Just a USB 3.0 cable.

If you have a desktop, break it out of the enclosure and install internally. If you have a notebook, break it out of the enclosure and test with another USB-SATA adapter.

You can't, it has not sata ports, it has a usb controller and port on the drives pcb. If you have some soldering skills you could try and pick up the sata & power traces on the board and manually solder connectors to it.

May be you should try it with 2 to 1 usb cable. I.e the cable uses 2 ports on the PC and gives one output. I am not sure if you get these cables with usb 3 But you can try with usb2.

LOL, no one's bothered to read what I said:

1) Internal problem, drive is buggered
2) It does not have a SATA interface so you cannot break it open and connect to a desktop

I'm trying to get it swapped now. :(

Would you by any chance know of someone in Durban who can help me?

Or well anyone for that matter.

Long shot, try Rectron who would charge small handling if they can do it.
