Samsung Galaxy Note 3

The accident cover is an excellent reason to go for the note 3. Still a recent revelation yet people have been gushing over this since even before its announcement. It's that mentality I'm trying to better understand.

Everything you described matches the note 2 as well. I'm already running 4.3 on mine with the focal camera which is brilliant, and let's face it, the gimmicky stuff is really gimmicky. It wears off in a day or two.

What I see from reading the forums and the various forms of brand bashing and brand support, is that there's been this shift without realising it. All of the reasons people use to bash Apple with, are kinda the same reasons why so many Samsung people buy Samsung. The hype, mostly. The baited breath anticipation. I'm referring specifically here to the buying decisions, not the functionality. It strikes me that Samsung and Google have managed to covertly adopt a marketing principle that was once sneered at by Apple bashers. Well I see some similarities at least.

What I don't see is innovation. I see the milking of a loyal consumer base who are happy to over extend themselves financially for a phone. This note 3 for example costs the same or more than a decent new laptop or PC. The only innovative strategy being adopted here is Samsung's warranty, which is fantastic. But it speaks volumes about their lack of innovation within their ranges of phones.

It's a spec war. The consumers are the armies, and I question whether they really agree with their decision to pick up arms and fight this fight on behalf of their overlords. Or whether they've even asked that question of themselves. We used to base our buying decisions on items that cost as much as phones now do, on things that actually made a material difference in our lives. It's consumer complacency at it's finest taking place imo, and the Note 3 exemplifies this.

I used to own the S3. It broke so I bought the Note 2 because I wanted a bigger screen, a stylus, and a better battery. Those were my factors that I took into account when making a decision. Now a new iteration either has to be innovative enough to convince me that it will have a material impact to me, or it has to blow me away in terms of the existing factors and reasons for going this route in the first place. The Note 3 does none of that for me. Hence why I began to question why others are so desperate to get their hands on it. Perhaps there are a few logical reasons for it that I'm not taking into account? But from where I stand right now, it's nothing but a tool for a company to use to take more of your money for very little reward. It's further evidence to me that we value our money very differently in modern society. We have a very different measure for various items and companies like Samsung and Apple play on this notion for their own reward.

Unless I'm wrong, and everyone wants this because the new features and spec enhancements will make a material difference to their lives?

I have to agree. One thing to keep in mind is that you don't save that much by opting for a lower specced phone. And until quite recently, lower specifications (like 1GB vs 2GB ram) made quite a difference to the experience. Also, it is not yet clear what newer releases of Android will demand from hardware. It happened before that older phones were not capable of running newer versions of Android (mostly occurred with the update from 2.3.7 to 4.0).

Aha, FOMO. Since when did FOMO become an actual buying decision? Look at it logically - what top end phone of the last, let's say 4 years, can't run the latest Android? If any can't, it's probably not down to spec, but rather manufacturing issues. Actually let's make it more specific - the S2. It even runs 4.3 without a shadow of a hitch.

FOMO is an excuse. It's not a buying decision. It's something you use after the fact to justify your purchase. If FOMO were a legitimate buying decision, everyone would be broke most of the time. Some are, come to think about it, specifically because of FOMO. Marketers are actually using FOMO as a tool these days. That's how you market to an uninformed audience. Nobody would ever aspire to be uninformed, so why let them prey on that emotional part of you? Much of marketing is about aspirations of the target demographic. To be marketed to using FOMO is actually rather ironically insulting. And to be sold on this basis is insulting to yourself...

people :Cough:Domin4tr1x :Cough: seem to just insanely buy everything like some crazed iTard for some reason.

This wasn't necessary at all.

The Note 3 pulverizes the Note 2, as it has double the screen res, 1GB RAM more, new back cover with better grip, 13MP camera, etc.

Also, the Note 2's UI and huge oversized interface does look outdated, and like a bulky old phone, next to the Note 3.

So really, it's a no-brainer , of course I would upgrade!

But to call someone a retard for being able to do it?

You'd upgrade because you have an old phone, which is perfectly understandable. You don't have (I'm assuming) a Note 2. And an S4. And an S3. And a Note 1. And an S2. And every Samsung Mobile product released in the last decade.

And iTard = rabid Apple fanboy. You know, the ones who line up outside the shop during the night before release to get the super dooper awesome iPhone 5S that's pretty much exactly the same as the previous one for which they also lined up. The ones who sound like they've reached spiritual nirvana just after some douche in a turtleneck makes a little speech. The ones who barge into threads insisting that "Android doesn't have multitasking either lolololol" or other blatant lies. That kind of thing.

I went to a Telkom Mobile shop and they had the Note 2 and S4 on display next to each other.

They should not do it, cos it seals the deal there and then. :D

The Note 2 just looked old and outdated next to the S4, so I would advise people not to do it. :o

I think personally its silly to get the note 3 if you have the Note 2 cause its not such a huge difference. And I can really see that some of the things DJ said are true in some cases. For me though coming from a s2 it makes sense. I was going to go for the lg g2 before I saw the note3 and it has everything I would like in a phone.

Problem?

Some people spend hundred thousands on the latest car, most just to impress friends.

I don't see how ME spending MY money is any of your business. If you feel you have to personally attack/insult people, then you have serious issues. ;)

It is actually a big difference.

The Note 3 also fits my description for a perfect phone, but I would also be happy with something a bit smaller, like a S4 + a stylus. :)

I would love to hear from Note 3 owners how the USB 3.0 is performing when copying files.

Where is the like button!!

So king rob are you moving from the unofficial s2 go to guy to the note 3 go to guy:D:thumbup:

I'm not sure of the exact speeds but it is defiantly faster then my Nexus 4 :) I would say it is about a third faster. I will try and get some actual numbers for you soon :)

I don't think that the speed increase can be attributed to the USB 3.0 port... the type of NAND storage on the device makes the biggest difference.

I am looking at it logically and I'm judging from my own past experience and the current situation of someone I know.

My previous phone was the Motorola Defy. I got it because the price was great, about 40% of the price of the S2 (flagship at the time). Shortly after that, ICS was released in December 2011. The custom rom community did great work to get everything working, but ICS and JB always remained slow because of the limited memory of 512MB. So I remained on Gingerbread as it was fast and very stable. But after a while, more and more apps emerged that only supported ICS and above. Some of these were really important apps too.

FOMO can certainly contribute towards the decision of some to upgrade to the latest phone. But in some cases it just makes sense to spend a little more as it will take you further in the long run. Had I gone for the S2 a few years ago, I probably wouldn't have bought the S4 a few weeks ago, as the S2 is still a perfectly good phone.

What about the SD card?

If I have a 64GB SD card that can read at 100MB/s and write at 60MB/s, then USB 3.0 would be most welcome.

i put my order in for one today, so hopefully by wednesday afternoon i'll have it. :) if i get my hands on a usb3 pc/laptop at work thursday, i'll post the time it takes to copy to the note 3 on usb2 and 3... unless someone beats me to it.

I just timed it and it took me 3 minutes 41 seconds and 30 milliseconds to copy 6.36GB (6 830 451 077bytes) of data to my Note 3 :)

If my calculations are correct that's an average of 29.4087 megabytes per second. I did copied the files over a gigabit network as well.
