It's still a very decent phone. The camera is getting on in age but other than that. Everything is still top notch.

Camera is the only thing letting it down, R2.5-3k is a fair price for one in top condition.

I can't install 6.1 for some reason. I get to Aroma starting, it hangs and phone reboots. Any ideas?

Change/update your recovery. Had the same problem when I used the idleKernel guys modified TWRP.

Another possibility could be you have a bad/corrupted download. Make sure md5 matches.

Ah, yes, I'm using v3 TWRP, which as mentioned here is buggy. I'll roll back to 2.8 and see if that helps.
 
My headphones are broken and no longer work in stereo properly. I checked with another pair and they worked. Can anyone suggest a cheap replacement? I'm specifically looking for that extra button so that I can play and pause and answer them as handsfree when people phone.

Try and see what Philips has. I'm very impressed with mine, although it doesn't have buttons

Anyone who got a new phone recently will have. LG, Sony and Huwawei come with the Play/Pause / Answer/End buttons. Save some bucks, check the boxes they came in.
 
I bought a battery from loot and got one with it. Wasn't too expensive if I recall. Around R296 for both. Looks like they still have stock.

the note 3 my MIL have been using has burned up during charge, actually started to melt the back cover. It still works fine, but if you try to charge it with the battery in, it charges 1% and then stops and says the battery is getting too hot. So if i can charge it externally, and have a spare battery to swop out with, she should be good to go.
