I think apart from the Screen and Spen software there's not much individual improvements to justify the price difference between a Note 3 and 4.

Plus with custom roms the Note 3 can be massively improved in terms of performance and updates.

That is what I have gathered from everyone comparing the two.

So maybe I should get a Note 3 now and wait for the 5 to officially upgrade.
I am currently on pay as you go as there was no decent phone to upgrade to at the time.

Yeah if you don't have an upgrade now then a Note 3 for 5k and below is a top deal IMHO.

Awesome
then I will start to look out for a decent Note 3.

Is there any specific model I need to look at or are all the models the same in SA?
Sorry for the stupid question but I am a Noob with Samsung and Note 3 in specific

You're looking for an SM-N9005 Snapdragon Quadcore variant. There's a lot of custom rom development for this version.

tempted to get the note3 on a good deal instead of forking out top dollar for a note 4

To those who have experience with custom roms etc, whats the chances of a Note 4 firmware port for the note 3?

Zero. You can't port one phone's firmware onto another unless they are essentially identical hardware-wise (like the htc One M8 vs the Google Play Edition of the htc One M8).

There's a good possibility that someone will make something that looks like the Note 4,for the 3 however.

But from what ive seen on xda, there's an S5 port for the note 3 ??? :wtf:

big ticket features for me would be the S-Pen software features as well as the the new TouchWiz UI

I wouldnt bother. Looking at what Samsung did to lollipop on their S5 its going to be horrible. Im running stock CM11 on my Note 3. Get about 20 - 23ish hours of usage on my device. Smooth as a baby's bottom. You lose the S-Pen extra features and stuff, but the pen still works as a pen.

www.carbonite.co.za

Plenty of them on there normally.

I have been monitoring for the past 3 weeks ... no Durban sellers. Plenty on Gumtree who are too generic or iffy. Almost getting sold on the Telkom Mobile Note 4 deal in the meanwhile. But would rather have a Note 3 with 2GB+ data a month for the next 10+ months which is why I prefer prepaid and a second hand Note 3.

see... thats just it... i want CM/Custom rom level beastliness but still want to be able to use the S-pen features... especially the more refined features for the Spen that come with the note 4.

Meh, I could always just wait till my upgrade in July next year... note 4 should be pretty affordable by then.... i hope

Now that I think about it. I remember the Note 2 was on contract for about R399 or something like that at MTN. When the Note 3 came out the Note 2 was only R199 with very limited stock.

Maybe we will se the Note 3 drop from R469 to about R299. If that's the case I'll get one for my wife and then I'll wait till June for my next upgrade.

You can get all the aftermarket tools for the s-pen though i have the google keep draw, think its called Sketch. Works 100% with taking notes. The only thing you lose, is the S-Pen wheel and being able to drag and drop icons between multi tasking. But If my options were have butter smoothness and Improved battery life vs S-Pen :P.

Im running the CM11 with the onePlus 1 skin flashed onto it. I have the full Unlock screen + menu and tray icons. It pretty much is a OPO now considering they share the exact same specs. I even have the camera, music player and dialler mod on it.

Why you guys no listen to me... Omega+ Lean Kernel. Or X-Note... But that comes with ALOT of bloat.

Best AOSP Rom is LiquidSmooth. It was awesome, but I missed the S-Pen features, even with all the work arounds.

So my Note's screen broke. Not the glass, but it is black and flickers when I unlock the phone. Everything works, but it is pretty useless since I can't see anything on the screen. Will Samsung claim ADH when it gets fixed?

Where are you located?

Take it to the Samsung repair centre, they will repair the phone and do the ADH claim on your behalf.
I had mine replaced a month ago at the branch in Riverhorse in Durban and from what the agent told me for them to remove the screen an ADH claim will have to be done.

That is what I was afraid of. I am going to take it to the Samsung repair centre in Brooklyn. I am located in Pretoria.

I didn't want to use my ADH claims, but it isn't that bad when you think about it. No other company would repair it for free.

Hoe long did it take approximately?
