Shame, man. Poor Samsung.

Now a Galaxy Note 2 smokes and spits flames on an IndiGo flight from Chennai to Singapore.

To be fair, an old device like that in a country like India has a pretty good chance of having a cheap non-genuine battery in it these days.

Though it looks like Samsung is taking the blame and all Notes are being banned from being switched on in the air by the Indian regulator.

India's aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), will send an advisory to airlines warning passengers to keep all Samsung Note smartphones switched off during flights or avoid carrying the phones on commercial jets altogether, a spokesman said.

Broken link

It's not, just clicked through to the article again.

I've copy and pasted here again, try this one:

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-samsung-elec-smartphones-india-idUSKCN11T1FC

First paragraph:

A Samsung Electronics smartphone stored in an overhead baggage compartment on an Indian plane emitted smoke in mid-flight on Friday, India's aviation regulator said, but there was no damage and the aircraft landed safely.

Passengers on board an IndiGo flight smelled smoke coming from the baggage bin and alerted cabin crew who saw sparks and smoke coming from a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 phone, the airline, owned by InterGlobe Aviation, said in an emailed statement.

Flight crew used a fire extinguisher on the phone and put it in a container filled with water, the airline said.

The IndiGo flight was on its way to Chennai from Singapore.

I would love to know the implications and repocusions within Samsung due to all of this. The Quality Department must be in deep doo doo.

My exchanged Note 7 force updated over night to the new 60% firmware. My battery icon is now green and at 100% so I guess my device is Safe.
But did the firmware just change the scale or is it really charged to 100%?

If he has the square symbol on the label it should be a true 100% charge (he does say it's on an exchanged unit).

Replaced Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices still having battery issues

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has been taking the heat of a major recall due to battery issues and phones catching fire. All affected devices are to get replaced, but it seems the new handsets are still not free of battery woes.

South Korean TV network YTN reports continued issues with exchanged Galaxy Note 7 smartphones. New units are said to be suffering from overheating problems and quick battery power loss.

We knew Samsung wanted to limit the battery from reaching its full capacity. This does mean the new phones should discharge faster, but these reports are disclosing rather extreme cases.

A user, surnamed Choi, claims his phone is draining at 1% per second, despite the phone being plugged in. After leaving it charging all night, his phone never reached even 10%.

Dammit. Samsung taking forever to bring the new units and LG only bringing the V20 in November.
