Samsung Galaxy S23

What have you done for Call Recording?
I walked away from call recording last year when I switched from a Xiaomi Mi 9T (had recording built in) to a Poco F3. Haven't really missed it - thought I would.

Guys, what is the best battery practice?

I have set my S23 Ultra to only charge to 85%. I wireless charge next to my bed overnight, on my desk and in my Ranger between the 35-85% range. Currently, my Ranger gives the phone fast wireless charging, while the fixed docks are normal/slow wireless charging due to their charging blocks (if I upgrade the block, they will fast charge).

Is the above optimal and will it get me through the 3 years of ownership I need to achieve?

How detrimental is the fast wireless charging, if I was to upgrade the charging brick attached to the desk/bedside docks to get to the max 15w the phone can take? Should I rather just stick with the slower normal wireless charging?

I dont charger mine overnight, I always have 25watt charger or the 25watt powerbank with me. SO I just charge when it needs it.

Most samsung dont last me 2 years, s23 ultra is doing well, but can see battery draining a bit quicker allready.

I am very heavy user, so that won't be normal experience.

Plain s22 lasted me maybe half a day lol

My S10+ lasted 4 years until I got the S23 Ultra.

Damn thats pretty impressively pure amount whatsapp groups I have kills battery life :(
I'm a pretty light user. on wifi 80-90% of the day and all daytime WhatsApp business etc is done via WA Web on my pc, so screen on time is super low until night time when I catch up on social stuff.

If I charge to 100% at 6am, I still have 70% when I get home at 5pm

I am hoping my mileage will deliver nice results over 3yrs.

New update is out for S23U 1.3gb
I installed the July update last night. It broke the thing where it is supposed to show where to put your finger to unlock - wasn't showing it so I kept missing the under display sensor.

When I saw the August update notification this morning, I smashed it immediately.

The finger print sensor marker is back and behaving again thank goodness.

Anyone here know if the CourierIT service Samsung's online store uses is overnight? Ordered a tablet and wondering if it'll arrive tomorrow in Cape Town from Joburg.

Is there any reliable way of connecting a 3.5mm audio device to the S23 using USB-C ?

All the USB-C to 3.5mm adapters, even the Samsung ones, seem to be rated very poorly. Like 1.9/5 stars. Either they don't have a DAC and don't work, or the DAC is poor so you hear hissing at low volume etc.

36 months isn't optimal, but the battery can still make it through to the end (Both my folks have 4 year old P30 Pro's which are still going strong)..

But the deal is solid - feel free to prove me wrong.

Cheapest other 36 month S23 Ultra deal I could find was R1083pm = R280 more x36 = R10k more over the term
Cheapest 24 month S23 Ultra deal I could find was about R1400pm = R4800 more over the term, yes a year shorter.

Cannot factor in trade in's if you don't have a qualifying trade in device.

Happy to be proven wrong with my numbers.

1 more thing: After 24 of 36 months, you would still have R9600 in monthly payments ahead - you could sell the phone for not far off that and settle the balance of the contract term. (For the straight and narrows, you can settle first and then sell if you live your life by the "can't sell a contract phone" rules)
I would have taken the deal when I saw it if I didn't take a new contract in December 2022. It's good value when you compare it to other offerings.

A short S23 review after 2 weeks of ownership.

I received the S23 through my insurance as a replacement for a stolen S20 FE (What an upgrade, right?). That was actually the second S20 FE that I have owned, and I had a Poco X3 GT for a year in-between the Samsungs.

I mention the above for added context since those 2 devices were what I compared the S23 to when using it over the first few days of ownership.

Build, handling and feel of the device + Display

Something I could not avoid from the get-go was how much smaller the device was compared to most phones you see these days. It is funny how a phone with a 6.1 inch display could be classed as compact in the year 2023. All that being said, the display is amazing with great colours, brightness and a high refresh rate.

The phone is solid and feels premium even though it is on the lighter side, although it is a bit slippery, so maybe get yourself a case before something bad happens. (9/10)

Camera

The S23 has an amazing camera setup. The pictures it takes are so consistent, no matter if they are taken by the main camera, ultra-wide or telephoto. Pictures from the main 50 MP sensor are saved as 12MP by default (which comes out looking great). I would recommend shooting in the 50MP mode if the subject is not moving much since you do get more detail in the picture. It is very helpful if you want to crop the picture a bit later on. The 50MP stills do take more storage space of course.

I would have liked the telephoto (3x optical zoom) to have further reach but that is just me being greedy.

Video can be recorded up to 8k at 30fps. Imagine quality is very good overall and it is paired with top notch video stabilization. Audio captured is clear. (9/10)

Day-to-day living with the device

Samsung One UI feels so polished, especially coming from a Poco its MIUI. That is really something Xiaomi should work on! Everything is clean and snappy. The phone has no problem flying through any task you throw at it.

One area where Samsung lacks behind the Chinese is charging and the battery capacity in their devices. The S23's max charging rate of 25W is atrocious, as is the 3900 mAh battery capacity. I miss the 67W charging and 5000 mAh capacity of the Poco. I have to manage my screen-on time after lunch if I want to make it to 5 PM, something that wasn't required with the Chinese device. And when I get home it takes more than an hour to fully charge the device. (8/10)

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy S23 is an amazing phone. It has an exceptional display paired with a camera system that produces gorgeous photos and videos. I would encourage anyone to get the S23 or its bigger sibling the Plus (which has faster 45W charging!) over a midranger if they can afford it. (9/10)

I didn't touch on everything, like its network connections, etc. since that is much of the same between devices on the market in each price bracket.

I have attached some photo samples.

I find it interesting that you also highlighted One UI over Miui as a massive improvement.

Miui used to be good, but it has lagged so far behind Samsung (and I am sure, Apple). For me, going from Miui to One UI was amazing - zero stutters!

Anyone moved from S22+ to S23+ ?

Are there any reasons not to make the move (issues apparent on S23 that are worse or the same) ?

S22+ has been great but as of last 4 months the overheating and battery drain has become frustrating

I never had stutters on the Poco but the overall experience didn't feel polished. Ads in the MIUI apps and them adding too much on top of Android. It felt a bit like how Samsung was around mid-2010's.

Using a POCO F5 currently.
No ads. No stutters. All good here.

Can someone please assist me regarding the e-sim ability of the S23 Ultra?

I currently run 2 physical sims in my Ultra. I have a 3rd contract sim with data that is being lost monthly which I want to use in my phone. I can have this physical sim converted into an e-sim.

My question is, if I have 2 physical sims and add an e-sim to the Ultra, will all 3 work at the same time or does the e-Sim take over from one of the physical sims?
