Actually, you could say that it was innovative, in that their approach unified the plethora of technology available into a cohesive, platform-defining piece of technology.

Not agreeing with MCD, but I think Apple don't get as much credit in this regard as they should. If it weren't for them, we'd be suffering the ignominy of Android devices that looked and felt like Blackberries

Sure, but down that rabbit hole is a jungle of arbitrary notions of when it can be considered innovative or not. For example, were they innovative when they left out feature that were already present in other phones? What features do they need to have to be considered innovative?

I don't mind giving Apple credit. They make good products. But we're playing fast and loose with well defined terms if we consider refinement innovation.

It's ok. You can agree with me. I'm not making any controversial claims by stating that apple is and has been a major force of innovation. Possibly without rival except for blackberry and Nokia in the mobile field. Going further back of course Motorola and Siemens also deserve a nod.

This is especially emphasised when compared to non starters in the innovation arena like Samsung.

I don't understand why I would stay away from a thread I am participating in. That seems very counter productive.

Because, my dear MCD, in case you haven't realised by now the topic of this thread is Samsung Galaxy S5, not Samsung v.s. Apple nor indeed Samsung v.s. anyone. It exists for owners/potential owners to share information about this particular phone model. It was not intended for you to use as a soapbox to rant on and on about how you hate Samsung, love Apple, despise the Chinese, etc.

All you are doing is making it harder for anyone with a genuine interest in information about the model to find that here with your constant attempts to stir up a hornets nest.

I'm not the one making those posts though am I? I can't very well agree on everyone's behalf. That aside, you've been active in this thread and up to nonsense long before the iPhone 6 thread even existed.

The fact remains you don't have to follow suite and be the caped crusader for the Apple side of the debate just because rabid fanboys from the Android/S5 side are talking smack about the latest iPhone.

Why does innovation have to only be a new feature?

The innovation was that Apple created a product that was more than the sum of its parts (despite missing some obvious pieces of functionality) and defined a platform. The standard of the iPhone when it was launched was some way ahead of its competitors, many of whom have fallen to the wayside.

I don't mind giving Apple credit. They make good products. But we're playing fast and loose with well defined terms if we consider refinement innovation.

Refinement indicates that the predecessors were capable, yet lacking polish. I don't think we could say that about the smartphone market at the time- resistive touch screens and QWERTY keyboards were the standard. Nobody needed a multitouch screen, until Apple showed them how to really make it usable.

It's easy to look back with the benefit of hindsight and state that Apple make good products- but back then, it was in a class of its own. There was nothing like it. That, to my mind, was an innovation. I know that we're playing a bit loosely with the terminology, but in the mobile space it is pretty difficult not to.

Your two statements contradict one another. Apple's innovations are as obvious as Samsung's. You don't think that AMOLED screens, ADH warranties and USB 3.0 connectivity are innovations? They've forced Apple to continually improve their offerings.

I can agree with that. :)

Thank you Samsung, for this amazing phone.

Yep, great little every day companion :) used my phone to get my sister set up on hers yesterday (my old Sony) as she lacked data. Also, Apple fanboy sat on my cardboard for around 2 hours solid yesterday. Highly impressed by how much fun R99 can add to a phone.

Exactly what I thought on Tuesday.

Went for interview.... got alert on Google Calendar, used Google Maps to get there, and Gmail to confirm room number.

So so happy with it!

Does anyone have issues when LTE is enabled? My S5 couldn't hold a call until I forced it to 3G only...
