Upgraded Samsung flash 'will be used in the next Galaxy smartphone'

With less than a week to go before the expected Galaxy S5 launch at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Samsung has today handed us one small piece of the GS5 hardware puzzle. In a post on the Samsung Tomorrow blog, the company has revealed a range of new LED flash parts for upcoming smartphones. The components include reflector-integrated packages, side-view LEDs and a flip-chip flash LED. And according to Samsung, one of the reflector-integrated flash LEDs — the 3432 1.8t — will be included in "the next Galaxy smartphone, which is expected to be introduced later this month." That'll be the Galaxy S5, then.

Samsung's new reflector-integrated flash is designed to allow for a wider field of view within a small package, with a lead frame, and "a reflector with its own optics and diffusion features." It's tough to draw any firm conclusions about the GS5 from this alone, but it does suggest that the reported merging of Samsung's digital imaging arm into its mobile division might be starting to bear fruit.

A Samsung roadmap revealed at the company's 2013 analyst day points to a 16-megapixel ISOCELL sensor with 1.12μm pixels being used in its flagship products for 2014, and recent test photo leaks have suggested the Galaxy S5 will indeed ship with a 16-megapixel camera.

Whatever form the Galaxy S5's camera takes, we've only got another six days to wait before all is revealed, and we'll be live from Barcelona to bring you full coverage next Monday.

Substantially more pixels will likely use substantially more power. HD res is still crisp and clear, and it's all the better if it's cheaper than the QHD model.

Same story with plastic vs. metal. I'll much rather have plastic - likely cheaper and definitely more durable.

Sometimes it's just nice if you don't have to be a cheapskate.

I reckon a metal Samsung Galaxy S5 will look and feel fantastic & the display will just be the cherry on top.

So...if I was due for a contract upgrade, I would go for the S5 metal body.
 
So far nothing solid on this, just a bunch of rumours. Nobody's sure if it'll be FHD or QHD. Given the truncated release interval from S4-S5, it would be quite an engineering achievement to shove a QHD screen into the same sized chassis, and to do so without compromising the performance, thermals and battery life would be even more so.

there is no truncated release interval. last year the S4 was release on the 14/15 of march (somewhere around there). that means is 3 weeks earlier, not that big of a deal

Somehow I saw June... oh now I see it's April. There was an update in June. So no not a huge difference.
 
New details on the Samsung Galaxy S5 camera reveal “Side Touch” camera button

As we get closer to Samsung’s next Unpacked event and the long-awaited debut of the Galaxy S5, more and more information about the device has leaked. The latest information relates to the camera and its hardware and software features. Probably one of the coolest features is the new “Side Touch” button, which is a replacement for the physical camera button that people have been demanding for ages.

This Side Touch button isn’t physical button, but is actually a capacitive button that’s reportedly completely hidden on the device. It’s located in the bottom right corner, which is where a camera button would typically go, and you simply tap it to take photos. It won’t work in portrait mode, Easy Mode or during video capture, but it’s cool to have nonetheless. Could this be a good selling point for Samsung? I do know a lot of people that want dedicated camera buttons to make a comeback.

The rest of the Galaxy S5′s camera hardware is exactly what we expect. The device is rumored to feature a 16-megapixel sensor capable of shooting 4K video at 30 FPS and 1080p video at 60 FPS. We’ll have to wait and see what kind of sensor Samsung is using, but I dearly hope that the company will surprise us with optical image stabilization.

Then there’s the software. As always, Samsung has stuffed as many software features into the device as possible. Adding onto the Galaxy S4′s plethora of camera modes, which are hard to find because there are so many of them, Samsung is reportedly introducing a few new ones. 3D Tour Shot lets you “create interactive virtual tours of your surroundings,” which sounds a lot like Photo Sphere. There’s also Focus Select, which allows you to adjust the depth of field.

Samsung is also expected to add some new visual effects and could also allow for the download of extra effects. The app itself will be changed slightly, mostly when it comes to its color scheme. Overall it sounds like the Galaxy camera experience is getting more robust, and maybe just a little cluttered.

None of this info is official, so take it with a grain of salt until the Galaxy S5 is officially announced on February 24th. ...

I've seen people holding their phones upside down while recording. Just because the screen auto rotates the think you can hold which ever way you want. Try watching an upside down video recording!

It's not about the money to me. Battery life and durability are amongst the most important attributes when I'm selecting a phone. The metal iPhones that some of my friends have all age terribly. If Samsung can implement QHD and metal bodies without compromising the phone then that's great and I'll get one, but if not and they provide a number of different models then I'll take plastic and FHD any day.
