Samsung i780

I downloaded all the components to EFN's cooked ROM including the official E1 ROM but have yet to decide whether to install it or not.

I would wait if I was you. Apparently, EFN is very close to releasing his new version, and there are rumours about the I780 showing up in Korea with WM 6.1, so it's possible the official update is just around the corner. :)

Hey guys

Thought I'd give those who are interested a heads up. V3 of EFN's WM 6.1 cooked ROM is available.

Thanx Maelstrom for the posts wrt the updates! Let me know how V3 runs... I'm VERY tempted...

Going to Vworld today to do their ROM upgrade, but doubt whether it will be anything later than C1.

Probably a stupid question, but if one should take the handset in to a service centre to do a firmware upgrade after doing a cooked version yourself, will they still do it? (and will the official one still install and work?)

Hey

Like I said. I'm really enjoying the ROM, even with a few niggles that it has, which is to be expected. Performance wise, I would say that it's definitely better than what I experienced with the B1 firmware that my phone arrived with. General OS performance and video performance is extremely good.

I don't see why they wouldn't do it, but just in case, you can also 'downgrade' to an official Samsung ROM (C1 or the like) yourself before taking it, and I doubt very much they would be any wiser. Fortunately, we recieved the generic versions of the ROMs on our phones, and not a Vodacom/Vodaphone branded one.

If the official upgrade does come out, it may or may not work with the cooked ROM. However, like I suggested earlier, 'downgrading' the phone back to an official Samsung WM 6.0 ROM would, I think, solve any problems with the official update once (and if) it arrives. :)

Hey guys,

Is everyone happy with their i780??

I have narrowed my new phone choice down to the i780, N95 8GB or the w960i and really cant decide!

I've had mine for a week or so and being the first PPC I've owned, I'm pretty happy with it.

Currently running EFN's cooked ROM V3 (E1 Rom & WM6.1) and having no problems at all.

So how long did this take and what level of firmware did they load?

The Saga:

Went to Samsung VWorld: "No sir we only have 2 technicians over weekends and it will take too long, so we suggest you take it to Vodacare, they have more technicians than us and it will take less time..."

Went to Vodacare:
Me: "What version of the ROM will be installed?"
Consultant: "There's no new software for it, the phone is new..."
M: "But the SAMSUNG consultant said there's a newer version available...?
C: "I don't know about that..."
M: "So can your technician have a quick look and tell me?"
C: "You have to book in your handset, an assessment will only be done after 24 hours..."
M: "And then...?"
C: "Then we can phone you and quote for the repair...?
M: "What repair, nothing is broken, I simply need a software upgrade on the handset...?
C: "You cannot upgrade now, because this handset is still new..."
M: Turn around and walk away...

I will phone/mail our company's SAMSUNG consultant today, but after Maelstrom and The Thug's good feedback on the cooked WM6.1 version 3, I think I'll rather take my chances and DIY.

This general scenario of incompetence whenever some basic service is required is a problem that is costing companies dearly and it is getting worse!

ACP, I was initially skeptical of upgrading thinking I was going to brick the phone but everything went smoothly.

Just make sure that you back up your contacts 1st.

What S/W do you use to backup SMS/MMS etc.? Does the bundled MIT software on the CD actually work on a restore to the new ROM? I'm not worried about my contacts, calender etc. as that will pull through from Exchange, just my SMS's/MMS's.

Then Garmin Mobile XT, is it as simple as re-installing it from the bundled SD card after the ROM flash? Does it pick up its registration/activation status online?

Yep. Once you insert the SD card into the phone, it'll automatically put the icon in the program menu so you can reinstall it, no need to reactivate it.

anyone found any pouch or case for I780 yet ? iv'e even tried looking for a phone of similar size's pouch that i can use but nothing yet :(

After dropping my Touch Diamond in the toilet on Sunday night I went out and got an i780 based on the comments here. Been a long-time WinCE/WM user.

i780JCHB1, CE 5.2.1944 Build 18547.0.7.3. Installed my SPB apps: MobileShell2, GPRS Monitor, Phone Suite, PocketPlus, SPBTime2, and then MS Reader, Pocket Stars, Pocket eSword, HandyMap, Google Maps, etc, etc. SPB Phone Suite doesn't support 320x320 so off it came. PocketPlus stopped drop-down menus from dropping down, so off it came. Other stuff seems to work fine, though haven't yet tested everything.

Raesteyn is right - the i780 needs to be hard-reset a few times to stabilise. Wonder why - it's not a WM thing but probably the quirkiness of the i780 implementation by Samsung. Another irritating lapse in Samsung quality control: you can't change the default live.vodafone.com Home page in Pocket IE, at least in the i780 I have (from VodaShop Sandton City).

The phone seems to pull cell signal better than my last three HTC devices (Kaiser, Diamond, Prophet), probably because of larger antenna. Oddly, it can't pick up the wifi at the outer limits of my home setup whereas all the previous HTCs did. Win some lose some.

I haven't yet mastered the mouse-thingy but will take the effort to learn it, and also try the 4-way touchpad config.

Dialling with small number pad will take some getting used to. I have dik vingers.

Overall this device is very well spec'd, and a real bargain at the price, especially compared to the latest HTCs, and even more so when you consider that Garmin Mobile XT is bundled (I paid R1100 for GMXT on my Kaiser, from Leaf). It comes with an extra battery and a case-charger which is pretty nifty. Car and mains charger also included. I really hate the proprietary USB and earphone connector as now I have to carry extra cables rather than a standard mini-USB.

Now to carry on customising ... easy on PC screen with MyMobiler. Fiddling is an endless ritual with these marvellous little devices, so I'm expecting another day of zero productivity.

Desperate for WM6.1 ROM update.

Nice one! I am sure it doesn’t compete with the Diamond but it is still a nice phone....I have a week till my upgrade is due and I am still unsure what to get! Really like the i780 but then there’s the W960i and the HTC P3470 and and and.....Think if it wasn’t R2K pay in I would get the Diamond. ;)

I'm after the timed profiles found in Phone Suite, but they don't support 320x320. What profile options are there in MobileShell if I may ask?
