Why agree? If "smart" just comes down to a difference of opinion it pretty much nullifies his assertion that the iPhone isn't (or wasn't) a smartphone. By the dictionary definition that he provided it fulfilled the criteria. Unless by agreed you've realised that there's no possibility of winning this circular, joyless debate so you're giving in. Mostly the latter. And it seems people get very attached to certain features, and that is all they will acknowledge as being important.
The wikipedia article describes the whole discussion around what a smartphone is, and the iPhone is considered to have defined the modern smartphone. If someone doesn't want to acknowledge that because of reason X that they consider important, they are not going to change their mind

I see he didn't try defend his statement that the iPhone was low end. I suspect he was just in the mood for a debate

It wasn't a smartphone, it was a mobile computer that could make phone calls, just like every other "smartphone" that has followed it since.

Strange that you won't find a single person in the industry that would try and claim that the iPhone didn't change the entire market.

It certainly lacked any smartphone features or connections when launched. Yes - they made up at later stages, but to have a smartphone lacking key smartphone features is - um - well - not really a smartphone? We all know there phones on the market able to do more than an iPhone.

What we also said was that it came down to definition though - if you feel great calling a phone with no decent connection and dumbed down abilities, great. I don't.

That said I still think it's a great basic device

As we discussed already, it didn't "certainly lack smartphone" features. It lacked some features you find important. 3G doesn't make a smartphone, nor does copy and paste.

How is it a basic device? It outperforms almost everything out there
