But wait for an update to the current version. Current version a bit buggy and slow. Unless you want to install V5 which was nice and fast, but it comes without some of the new features like QT support, OraTsu & Wikitude

Cool stuff, it sounds like it will be worth the wait.. were your contatcs and media affected once the FW was in?
 
The only things I save is my contacts & messages, nothing else. Backing-up up media and programs take too long. I just copy my media to my hdd via Total Commander and then copy it back after new firmware installed. After a few firmware upgrades, you begin to only install the really necessary programs. :)
 
Ok so I'm thinking about doing the firmware upgrade now, but have no idea where to being... can you please give some advice on this? I'm worried I'll end up doing more harm than good!
 
I would actually just use a friend's PC with Windows XP. It is just not worth the effort the the whole virtualisation thing. I used my stepdad's pc because I have Win 7 on my laptop.
 
Anybody else here installed V8 yet?

Extra programs I have installed now which works well are: Gravity (Twitter, Google Reader [awesome], Facebook), Mobile Documents (HTML supported emails seeing that Nokia's email software doesn't), Upcode (QR Reader), Mobile Tag (QR reader + price comparison), Shoppy (create shopping list), Notebook (only useful for playing naughts & crosses or draw a DnD dungeon), Nokia's Photo Browser (beta and not really great), Dropbox plugin and GDesk (interesting skin creator, etc.).

Im going to attempt the upgrade this weekend.. will let you know how it goes.
 
So i flashed my phone and i have to say it was damn easy and i regret not doing this sooner.. the responsiveness is immediate. It actually feels like a new phone. Too bad it deletes everything off the memory card too.. its a schlep reloading everything now. I need to get used to the new homepage but i need to give it time i guess. Full credit to AJ for keeping this page updated with all the useful links.
 
Do you have to leave the card in?

Hi, glad to hear all the good feedback about flashing the phone since I want to do the same. Does anyone know if you actually have to leave the memory card in when you do the flash? I'm worried about losing my Garmin...:confused:
 
yeah thats kinda what happened to me and now i cant get my Garmin back. Its succesfully reinstalled but nothing shows up under applications. No icon and no nothing under the search bar. AJKock let us know how you got your Garmin to work again.

EDIT: Ok i got it to work by going into the applications manager and activating it from there. Now its asking me for the coupon code, i will let you know once its up and running.

Mmm, I have to think how I fixed that. I remember vaguely that I had a similar problem with the first flash (because how it was originally installed), but after the reinstall any further flashing doesn't affect it.

The thing is that you flash the c drive with the flashing, which means all references to installed programs are removed (you can only reliably do backups of your messages and contacts). In your applications there should be a button called navigator? Try it.

If it doesn't work, reinstall Garmin from your CD.
(If you look on your E drive, the files should actually still be there).

I will see if I can find out more on the forum. Maybe this will be prevented by removing the memory card before flashing, because they specifically in the instructions say that you should not format the E drive and I never understood why they mentioned that, when the firmware never asks you if it should format the E drive.

@Remus768 You can modify the home screen. Instructions are on the forum. Do not try and edit the xml with a text editor. Use the program they provide on the forum. Very easy to do.

Looks like it. I can vaguely recall some coupon business when I received the phone so il retry that to get the Garmin functional. I hope this wasn’t a 1 time only coupon.
 
There is a coupon number on the inside of your Garmin CD pack. It says keep it in safe place, so I assume it is not just a once off use.
 
No worries about the Garmin, i called the helpdesk and the coupon business was resolved in minutes. I now have what i think is the latest version 5.00.60s60.9.SA. I also get an annoying message after i unlock the phone "Memory Full". The SPB Shell is awesome, it does slow the phone down a tad but with Turbo mode on its quick, easy and customizable.

I would recommend an upgrade to the HyperX firmware to anyone reading this.
