Hi,

I am currently using a Samsung Galaxy S2 which has treated me very well and I have had no issues with the phone yet.

I am considering to upgrade, but would like to make an informed decision.

Which phone would you choose and why?

Both phones are excellent in their own right. It depends heavily on you, are you invested in the Android ecosystem more or can you make a switch to iOS without a problem? The S5 has dust and water ratings so if you need a phone that can withstand that, the S5 is your best bet. You can also look at the Sony Xperia Z2 as well if you are looking for IP ratings and better build quality. The iPhone has excellent build quality and is easy to learn and use. Personally, I would go for the S5.

Thanks.

How does the Z2 compare in terms of spec to these 2 phones?

The Z2 is probably the best phone available right now - excellent screen, 20MP camera, 3200mAh battery, Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB RAM, waterproof etc.

I would take a Z2 or S5 over a 5s any day. They're a generation ahead, as the iPhone 6 is what will rival them.

Personally, I'm most interested in the LG G3. It will probably be announced around June, and will probably have the best specs of any Android device. LG has pretty average software, but I use Cyanogenmod anyway so that's a non-issue.

Will look at the Z2 as well then

Had an Xperia X10 some years back, but wasn't happy with it. Happy with the S2, hence my bias to the S5, but not set on any spesific brand...

Throw in a Google Nexus 5 ;)

Hell no. It's a mission to get hold of one in this country, it has a rubbish battery and camera, it's going to be outdated in a few months and you're on your own if something goes wrong.

Considering you are on android already it would only be a pain in the ass to switch.

There is so little difference between them I would just stick with what I know.

The new HTC One will blow them all away including the S5. But that's just my opinion, as I feel Sense is now much better. The overall design and software of the One is why I'm moving that way. For me form factor is important, and Imo the ONE is a beautiful device.

HTC support in South Africa is non-existing, very risky to buy one and it's a dud.

The HTC One is one of the worst flagships atm imo. No IP certification, a very average 4MP 'ultrapixel' camera that is fooling no one, no support in SA, and worst of all, a gargantuan lower bezel on the front. I'd steer well clear of the One just for that bezel.

For R5k? You can get a brand new S4 on Gumtree for up to a grand cheaper, and the S4 kills the Nexus 5 in every possible way.

Compared to what?

Come now, the Nexus 5 has a 2300mAh battery and a camera that every reviewer on earth has labelled as poor. Compared to all the decent Samsung, LG, Sony etc. phones it comes up short.

But but...its a Nexus.

Seconded. Unless you want to switch to iOS, one of the Sony Xperia devices would be my first choice.

Z2 is not available "right now"
