Samsung S5 vs Iphone 5s (or Iphone 5)

This is something I don't get. I've had various cellphones for almost 20 years now and haven't had one die because of dust or water. I know accidents do happen but the chances of my phone getting stolen is bigger than it failing because of dust or water damage and that is why I have insurance which will replace it in the event of an accident.

Well maybe because after going through an S2, an S3, an S4 and a Note, I've come to realise that Samsung has become an over bloated, under developed, rushed out pile of cheap schyte. Thats hardware and software btw.

I ran CM on my S2 quite beautifully and that combination was still the best I've ever had, but then it all dipped and it became a mission to get a samsung phone married with decent software that worked.

Again, you're obviously doing it very wrong. Getting a custom ROM suited to your needs is rookie stuff.

My condolences.

Everything Samsung wants to be it and it works beautifully. I'll grant you the camera is not as nice as the S4, but that's not to say that it doesn't take nice photographs, because it does.

And I have never not lasted a full day, as opposed to fiddling and flashing and tweaking Samsung's bloated offerings. Easily 4 hours screen on time as opposed to a friend now who is complaining about her S4 battery life being so poor and I haven't got the inclination or the patience to fix it for her (I will but it's such a fsckin drag)

Wtf? 4 hours screen-on time is abysmal - I get nearly 10 hours. And no, the camera does not even qualify as decent. It's straight up bad, and yes, I have played around with a Nexus 5. There is no bloat if you aren't running stock firmware on Samsung, LG, Sony etc. devices. And vanilla Android is obviously not what Samsung are going for. If it was, Touchwiz wouldn't be so terrible after all these years.

CM isn't the only custom ROM. Not by a long way. If vanilla Android is your preference, there are ROM's for that. You can get the exact same firmware as your Nexus 5 on pretty much any flagship from any vendor.

I last looked a couple of days ago thinking I could flash it onto my dusty S4 and it was on about the 4th nightly. Way too early for a daily driver.

I've been using CM Nightlies for years now, and I've had an issue maybe 3 or 4 times ever. There's plenty of feedback available on Xda for each release, and I don't update very often. It's pretty easy to just use the best Nightly for a month or so.

That's interesting Kingrob, but I'm just very surprised if this is not a different phone. Samsung have been consistent since the s3 followed by the S3 mini, then S4 and s4 mini and now the S5. That wouldn't be the S5 mini due to the size shown there, and it won't be the Note 4 either for the same reason ie size.

I'll be amazed if they announce another S5 with better specs just months after their big release of the current S5. Their production would suffer immensely, as they have probably produced quite a bit of the current variant already. Those who have purchased now, this group would also seriously be annoyed if that was to happen.

How's the bloatware on the Z1/2?

That's something which is really putting me off Samsung!

Say what you like about iOS but in terms of burden on resources it's frugal in relation to its Samsung counterparts!

I believe if you looking for lightweight, vanilla the Nexus is the way to go but hardware specs are possibly a little underwhelming when compared to the top end Sony's/Samsung's.

I've gone the custom rom route on my S4 and use Titanium to kill the apps I don't use but I'm tired of faffing and also find some of these killed apps have an annoying way of reviving/resurfacing/updating themselves!!

I'm amazed that you are pushing custom roms and rooting, when Imo it's so unnecessary these days. Stock not good enough for you? Feck, what do you guys do with your phone's, race it around a track to see which is faster? My phone lasts me less than a day with moderate to heavy usage, into the charger and there I go again.

I reckon Samsung will release it like a week before the iPhone 6 gets released, as it will really make people think twice before signing up for another iPhone contract.

I can't remember once having lost a phone due to water damage, and I have gone through so many phones before. I bet before they introduced water resistant phones, you didn't really mind not having one that could survive a drop in water right? So why now?

I have on numerous occasions taken my phone waist deep into the ocean and swimming pool, held above my head whenever anyone splashes, to take photos of the kids playing in the water.

I have on many occasions lay in the bath reading on my phone. On a number of these occasions I have crapped myself when I've almost dropped my phone.

I have also had to wrap my phone in a zip lock plastic bag when going mountain biking when there had been reason around.

I have also had two friends who have ended up in the swimming pool at parties with their phones in their pockets.

People are too quick to dismiss a new feature when their beloved phone does not have it. What are the negatives of having a water resistant/dust proof phone?

Can you show me some bad pics you have taken with the N5? Well, no you can't because it's second hand information of course. And eve if it was so bad, it's a telephone for goodness sake. One that you might want to occasionally snap a pic of something or the odd selfie here and there. And for that, it's excellent. I know. You don't. Simples.

If you can be bothered, great stuff. You obviously still have a hard-on for flashing and stuff, but why would you assume everyone else does? But what phones have you flashed CM on and what other ROMS have you used? How many years is years btw?

Sony is much better than Samsung when it comes to bloatware on their stock firmware. In fact, everyone is better than Samsung when it comes to bloat. This is only an issue if you don't plan on installing custom firmware though. Cyanogenmod is the same on all devices - you're just buying hardware.

Don't use Titanium or similar apps to continuously kill background processes. That would be a big schlep. Just use ROM Toolbox Pro or Titanium (assuming it can - I don't use Titanium) to freeze unwanted system apps that can't be removed. Then install Greenify from the Play Store and set all the pesky apps with background processes to hibernate when not in use.

I've heard people say stock is good enough so many times. And every time I let someone fiddle around with my phone they immediately want to know how to root and install custom firmware. It is much, much faster than stock, and battery life is better too. I'd hazard a guess that most people don't like stressing about charging their phones half way through the day. With a phone like an S3, S4 or S5, you can easily make it through a day with moderate usage. And even if you want to spend the whole day playing games and downloading torrents on your phone, with the aforementioned devices you can just switch out the battery and not need to charge at all.

Most people require a good camera in their phone. The fact that you don't makes you an outlier, and you shouldn't recommend a device suited to your unique needs to other people.

My next phone will likely be the LG G3 if the current leaks prove to be true, so I don't have a hard-on for Samsung. Even if I had to buy a phone right now it would be the Z2.

My first foray into the world of rooting and flashing custom firmware only took about an hour thanks to the instructional videos and custom firmware directories on Xda. And once you've done it, repeating it is less than ten minutes. A tiny price to pay for having a better phone 24/7.

You can refute all you want but the best accessories, support and software are made for iphone.
When an iphone gets a decent screen size then it will be great, the dinky little ones available now are far too small for my liking though.

For the first time on any android phone I ran my S3 stock for a year and a half. It then started doing random things and getting slow so I rooted and installed CM. It brough back all kinds of memories of fiddling and changing radio versions etc etc etc.
These days the only thing I would consider is either stock android with updates or iOS with its updates. No mess, no fuss.

Exactly. Great with my S2 a couple of years ago, but exactly how I feel. I'm using Franco kernel on my N5 but that's as far as I'll go because it's quick and easy.
