I need to verify my banking details with SARS, is the only way to go in to a branch with the documents, no chance of submitting them online or faxing?

Call centre today said I have to go to a branch with copy of ID, proof of residence and a bank statement not more than 3 months old, they said there's no other way to verify.

Strange that, I updated on the websiteafter speaking to call centre in September, after opening a Capitec account. Never submitted any supporting documents either.

I'll try again tomorrow and see what they say.

Make sure you make a copy of your bank statement before submitting it. They take the statement to put it on file, and if that is the original one you got through snail mail, it will be lost to you.

Have you done your efiling and was the new account on your profile / money owed to you paid into the new account?

Wow ok that is nice. Previously you could only do it at the branch.

The option is not available on the mobile site as that's where I tried initially. Could add the new account and address but no payment received. Called call centre and was told to access full site and remove old details to cancel conflict. Then payment cane through.

Where does one start as a first time tax payer?

Contact SARS ok 0800007277 to check if you are registered for income tax.

If you are, get the tax number from them and register on efiling to submit your tax returns at www.sarsefiling.co.za

If not registered, you will need to register with SARS for income tax, submit supporting documents such as ID, proof of address and bank details. You can then register on the efiling website.

If you are registered you can also ask SARS if there are any outstanding returns on your profile. This could delay any refunds due to you.

What's the penalty for late submission of a tax return? And then if late submitted, does it matter being 1 day late vs 29 days late?

10% of the tax liability on your assessment + interest from payment due date. Interest is calculate daily.

Admin penalties start at R250 for every month that the return is not submitted.

And if they are going to owe you a refund, is that to say you would forfeit ten percent of the amount owing to you?

No, but they might add the R250 admin penalty every month and deduct it from the refund amount.

Thanks, I can live with that. I'm looking at a few grand back in refund money and as i left it till so late I want to get things right. Will check their Calculator thingmabob soon enough to know if I am on the right track. I may still enlist the services of a tax consultant and I realise he is probably swamped right now with last minute submissions by clients.

Must we submit before 25 November? i.e. 23:59 24 November at the latest?

Looks like i am on track to submitting on the 23rd in any event.

Is one allowed to claim an admin cost if managing one's own rental property without an agent? I had heard it said you could claim back ten percent of the rental income as "admin".

Latest to submit is on the 25th so at 23:59 25/11/2016.

You allowed to claim any expenses related in the generation of the rental income. I have no idea where you heard the 10% admin claim. You can only claim for actual expenses.

Basically any expenses you would not have had if you did not own the rental property and renting it out. You must also be able to provide proof of the expenses should SARS request them.

If you have to travel to house every months to inspect the property you can claim this, telephone calls to the tenant, maintenance contractors and any reasonable costs you incur directly related the rental property and renting it out.
