Hi,

My IRP5 reflects a PAYE of R64 222.03
Have just submitted my return to SARS
My return payment is 0.64c

How is this calculated?

Your employers HR takes your bruto salary amount (after deducting say your pension fund/provident fund amount) and deducts PAYE tax (and other deductions) and then you get your net salary paid out.

If your employers HR is competent you will not owe SARS additional tax or be due a tax refund (if you have no claims from having contributed to a RA or travel claims or medical aid related claims or such).

Clear enough?

You could have paid a million Rands in tax and not have anything returned, or you could have paid 3k in PAYE and get 12k back. It all depends on your personal situation and deductions, i.e. medical aid, retirement annuity etc.

Although I don't think it's possible to get more back than you paid.

EDIT: Unless you're a Gupta

Of course it is.

If your salary was 8000 every month for the 2017 fiscal year, you paid 3645 in total in PAYE. If you paid medical aid for you and another person, your total return will be 6864, which is 3219 more in tax return than the total PAYE paid by you.

In which case you'll surely only get R3645 back.

No, you'll get 6864 back.

Surely you can't have "negative" tax. I can't believe that our tax system allows for that. (unless, as stated above, you're a Gupta).

Actually, me thinks you guys are smoking something.

You don't understand how tax returns work, then. They're giving you back tax on other things that you paid tax on through the year, i.e. medical aid (as in my example), RA's etc.

You don't understand tax, your deductions (RA's) and rebates (Medical Aid) only reduce the amount you pay in tax up to the amount of Rnil. You can only ever receive a refund on what you have Actually paid, on PAYE and/or Provisional tax. You will NEVER receive more money than you originally paid in.

Have you considered the possibility that you don't know how they work?
