SARS eFiling 2025/2026

Wonders never cease, my refund was paid into bank account this morning, 3 1/2 days after allocation to SARS official.
2026 SARS journey
Nice.
Submitted both my, and my wife's returns on 17/07. Both requested supporting docs. Hers is finalised, mine still waiting to be allocated to an official. Luck of the draw I guess..

Frak, I owe them 14k, thanks to company shifting year end and the bloody new bonus coming in end of Feb... Couldn't wait till March noooooo had to put it in Feb sigh.

They asked me to submit supporting documents on 15/7/2026 for verification and I done so the same day.

I received a notification today that I have been allocated to a SARS official and the verification process has started.

So is it 21-days from now or 21-days from the 15th?

So, on the same day (30/07) I was allocated to an official I received 'Finalised Without Changes' and 'Completion' letters.

I should then be owed a refund (per my latest Statement of Account) but the refund status on the portal says nothing is due.

Am I still waiting 21-days? Because everything was given all clear am I in the 72-hour window (expecting payment tomorrow)? Will we ever find out? Tune in next week for another whine post.

I guess I better scrape together the amount, so you can all get paid.
Yup, I'm scraping too.

I just paid VAT at the end of July. Must pay PAYE by Friday the 5th of August.
Then start saving up to pay 2027 Provisional Tax (1st Period) before the end of August.

I told my daughter how many times a year I pay tax and she didn't believe me!
Told her, every month its PAYE/UIF, every second month its VAT, and twice a year its Provisional Tax.
I run our business as a Sole Prop.

Just burns my butt having to do provisional.

Was speaking to someone recently, he is a ceo/shareholder/owner/director of a company he doesn't have to do provisional, thought that if you were director of company you are automatically required to do provisional ? (and yeah I was moaning about sars paperwork)

I have an external bookkeeper that has been doing my work (VAT) every 2 months since 1993, capturing all the data into Pastel.
Then twice a year (more if needed) she liaises with the Chartered Accountant who does the provisional tax.
The rest of it, the day-to-day stuff, payments and filing, I do.

Every couple of years SARS asks for more documentation, which we provide, and then it's usually over.
What I pay my bookkeeper for doing my VAT and PAYE/UIF, is worth it. Even the accountant's fee is fair.

I suppose everyone is different how they go about their tax, this is how I do it, the service is relatively cheap as mentioned and they're available for queries from myself or SARS, usually the same day.

I certainly don't burn my butt doing provisional tax, I leave that part to the professionals. I suspect it's my bookkeepers work inputting everything into Pastel every two months for VAT purposes, and it's that data that makes life easier for the accountant, finalising figures and then trial balance etc.

Later this year around November, the accountant will contact me again so they can finalise the 2026 provisional tax at which point you will be assessed for last year's (2026) provisional tax. It's at this point you'll know if you paid enough Provisional Tax for that period or not, and if you'll need to pay penalties and/or interest or even get a small refund.
That is the most stressful point of it all, I'd say. Stress and then relief once assessed.
Because of that stress its best to pay a bit more into Provisional Tax, so that you don't get penalties or get charged interest on an underpayment. SARS refunds you almost immediately.

The drawback of acting as a Sole Prop is that when you reach a certain threshold of net profit, your tax rate is in the region of around 43% or thereabouts. Companies pay a flat rate but then again, they have more financial obligations which includes auditors etc. Never been there, so can't say.
