Sars under siege

The purge continues.

SARS a couple of days ago allowed staff to make a once off choice in the encashment of accumulated leave. One of the categories is called 'Old leave'. Here the option is all or nothing. You can sell all your old leave or nothing. I am pretty sure this was done to accommodate some people who wish to exit the organisation. If you resigned you lost this old accumulated leave, it was only paid out on retirement. Now you can cash it in and then resign (once off).

I know one guy with more than 400 days accumulated leave.

Eskom is doing the same thing. My uncle (who is a very ill man) was hanging on until 65 so he could retire with full benefits, but is now considering retiring 2 years earlier because of the leave payout.

SARS SPOKESMAN RESIGNS

The SA Revenue Service's (Sars) long-time spokesman Adrian Lackay has resigned.

However, Sars on Friday would not confirm his resignation.

"We don't comment on the movement of staff," spokeswoman Marika Muller said.

Lackay would also not comment on the matter saying he was not permitted to speak to the media.

The troubled revenue service has seen a number of senior officials resign or be suspended recently, some ending up in the Labour Court.

This has been amid allegations of a special projects unit engaging in illegal activities in Sars.

I'm happy Adrian left, he is a good man that was caught in a difficult position.
