SA's top e-mail spammers named and shamed

The have a cell number on their website: 083 519 1823

Next time a dodgy website asks for a cell number to register, Bob's you uncle.

What's the point of this list? Every month it gets published and the same names are on the list. A waste of time publishing it I think.

The spamming got so bad, that I am sending all my mail straight to junkmail. It was easier setting up a white list of people that can email me, than blocking the junk. So selling anything to me via email just became useless, maybe if everyone did that they would actually stop spamming people. Now if I could only do the same for my sms messages.

I can deal with the spam mail, but what is seriously pissing me off is the spam SMS'es. I am on the DMA optout list, yet I still get bombarded with sms'es from these fools who claim they are members of the DMASA.

My gmail account does such a good job of filtering out spam that I hardly ever get spam emails.

Also, contrary to popular belief, it is still currently not illegal to spam in South Africa.

At the very least someone is taking a stand on this issue...the list does get used by a number of providers to blacklist (although it is not published by ISPA for this purpose). Most importantly there are a large number of "innocent" purchasers of dodgy address lists which are educated about spam through being listed on the Hall of Shame - once they become aware of the listing the vast majority realise that using such lists is damaging their reputation and sign an undertaking that they will not do so in future. They are then removed from the list.

And if ISPA is being sued by one of those on the list and has been referred to the Competition Commission as a result of publishing the list then it is clearly having some impact
